Here is the base plate system for my Cardboard spool core container storage system.

It allows combining several spool core cardboard boxes to be grouped together on a base plate to allow carrying or even stacking them.

The system features both 2x1 and 2x2 base plates, for both the wider outside rim box bases and lids, as well as another profile for the narrower inside-only box bases and lids, so you have the freedom to pick whether you like the slightly stronger, but wider outside-edge boxes, or the narrower inside edge boxes.

 

The base plates can be easily printed flat on the bed without supports.

 

If you want to create multiple stacks of container groups, you can use the base plate coupler, which features ridges on top and below and allows stacking of base plates on top of a set of cardboard spool core containers. Couplers are available in both 2x1 and 2x2 configuration for both the outside and inside edge box sizes.

Base plates can also be used upside down on top of a set of open spool core containers to use them as a form of dividers to put pens/pencils/brushes and the likes into and spread them throughout the container. Note: If you want to use it this way, make sure to print the right size base plate - if you print a regular outside edge base plate, then you should use it together with a doubler to create a tight fit.

If you would like to use it with a regular narrow edge open top cardboard spool, you should print the inside edge narrow baseplate (or coupler if you want to use the right side for single tower stacking) so it sits tight on top of the plain cardboard spool.
Or if you are using both, then you can use the Hybrid plates, which can fit both outside and inside edges as they have appropriate sized stepdowns for them.

Or you can mix and match, using just half of a base plate as a pen divider and use the other half for stacking. With this simple extensible system, the only question is, how far are you going to stack?

 

Outside edge & inside edge baseplates & couplers

Just as the box bases and lids provide, the base plates come in compatible flavors:

  • the narrower inside edge size
  • the wider outside edge size
  • and a hybrid base plate, which can sit both inside and outside edge base/tops using steps in the plate

Simply pick the profile that fits your use case.

 

The plates are designed for a cross-compatible stackable pattern, so you can even mix and match and use a wide baseplate for boxes with an outside edge base on one layer, and then use inside edge lids and stack some thinner inside only boxes on top.

 

Since the inside narrow edge box bases and lids are the same width as the cardboard spools themself, they can be used as open top dividers without the use of a doubler.

 

You can pick between 2x1 or 2x2 base plates in both outside, inside edge and hybrid size to conveniently start your stacking tray adventure. The sky is the limit.

Print Settings

  • Supports: 
    • No for baseplates
    • Yes for couplers (supports are enabled on the coupler models and set to use an interface layer of PLA assuming you print the model with PETG - if printing them in PLA, I recommend using support filament or PETG for the interface layer to make removal simple)
  • Layer Height: 0.20mm
  • Infill: 15% gyroid
  • Walls: 2
  • Print orientation: Flat on the bed
  • Material: PETG for plates. PLA for support interfaces for couplers.
