Parametric True-Weave Elliptical Basket

It is notoriously difficult to find high-quality woven basket designs—often they look like a single solid block, or they aren't the right dimensions for your specific space and resizing can be disastrous. This project isn't about downloading a static file; it’s about turning your printer into a digital basket weaver instead of forcing a fixed shape out of a nozzle.

Description

Stop printing "basket-shaped" blocks and start weaving. This parametric generator uses OpenSCAD math to simulate a traditional over-under weave pattern across a customizable elliptical footprint. Whether you need a small organizer or a wide fruit bowl, the "weaver" recalculates the geometry from scratch based on your dimensions.

 

The result is a model that captures the organic flow of wicker while utilizing FDM-specific optimizations to maintain structural integrity.

 

Technical Design Decisions

To improve reliability and printability without supports, several core optimizations are built into the script:

  • Arachne-Optimized Footing: To help the wall generator create a continuous anchor line, every weave band features a 0.4mm flat bottom. This provides a stable starting point for the toolpath before transitioning into the chamfered overhang.
  • The "Grout" Binder Ring: A hidden internal ring is generated at the top of the weave. This acts as "grout" to seal the gaps between the vertical ribs and the horizontal bands, preventing light from shining through the upper assembly.
  • Dynamic Z-Anchoring: The top rim and handles are not placed at a fixed height; instead, the script calculates the exact top edge of the highest weave band and anchors the rim precisely 0.4mm into that surface for a clean, manifold weld.
  • Automated Structural Bonding: Guesswork for intersection gaps is removed. The weave overlap and band chamfer are automatically calculated based on your rib and band thickness, ensuring the bands are always sufficiently buried into the ribs for a strong bond.

Pro Tips for a Successful Weave

1. The Reliability Angle

For the best results and minimal stringing, keep your walls relatively steep (roughly 75° relative to the bed).

  • The 50% Rule: Your Top Diameter should generally not exceed your Base Diameter by more than 50% of the basket's height.
  • Example: A 60mm tall basket with a 130mm base should have a top diameter around 160mm.

2. Slicer Settings

  • Wall Generator: Arachne is highly recommended. It handles the variable-width intersections where the weave meets the ribs much better than traditional generators.
  • Supports: Designed to be printed without supports.
  • Wall Loops: 3 loops are recommended for a sturdy feel.

3. Managing Minor Stringing

While the 0.4mm flat bottom and automated chamfers are designed to eliminate the need for supports, FDM printing can still produce minor stringing on the underside of the bands depending on your filament and cooling setup.

  • If you see "fuzz" on the bottom of the weave, try increasing your cooling fan speed or slightly lowering your printing temperature.
  • Slowing down for the outer wall layers can also help the nozzle successfully bridge the overhang between the ribs.

4. Resolution

The file is set to a master resolution of 120. This ensures smooth elliptical curves and high-fidelity braided textures in the final render.
