Description
MicroSnap™ is a flexible, reusable micro snap matrix fastener designed specifically for 3D printing. Instead of fibers or adhesives, it uses an array of tiny printed PETG hinges that interlock under pressure and release cleanly when peeled apart.

The result is a durable and slightly flexible fastening surface that behaves similarly to hook-and-loop systems—but with a fully mechanical, geometry-driven grip.

This STL can either be imbedded into your 3d designs models or Epoxy/double sided taped to the surface you need to connect. I recommend thin foam double-sided tape.

Material Recommendation (IMPORTANT)

Print in PETG for best performance.

PETG provides the ideal balance of:

Flexibility (for hinge action)
Strength (for repeated snapping)
Layer adhesion (prevents breakage)

PLA is NOT recommended – hinges will fatigue and snap quickly.

Print Settings (Suggested Starting Point)

Layer height: 0.1
Walls: 2–3
Cooling: Moderate (don’t over-cool PETG)
Speed: Very Slow- layer bond maximized

Fine-tuning tip: Slightly higher temps can improve layer bonding for hinge durability.

Make sure to dry PETG or else the stringiness will ruin the print

How It Works

MicroSnap™ uses a matrix of micro-scale snap features that:

Flex slightly when pressed together
Mechanically interlock across the surface
Release when peeled apart from an edge

This creates a satisfying “snap engagement” feel across the entire interface.

Notes

This is an original mechanical fastener system, not a hook-and-loop fabric. It’s designed to be a printable alternative using engineered geometry instead of fibers.

I played with this idea back in 2022 and everyone either loved it or critized it. Anyways I still use the original file I printed to mount my fan remote, so I got 4 years out of the very first prototype, and it's still working!
