Update: 2026-06-13

• After more testing we found some new issues, so I'm posting a V3 version for those who want to give the new design a go.
  • With the new design a lot of the parts don't work with the old ones, just print everything.
  • Improvements.
    • I updated the design to work with bearings, for larger spools there was too much wear just from winding them.  This will prolong the life of all the other parts by a lot.  If you don't want to use real bearings then you can use the bushings included on plate 2.  Personally I just use bearings on the bottom and bushings on the top since it doesn't see as much of a load.
    • I beafed up the spools a little more as they were a little to flimsy.
    • Everything now uses the the same M3x10mm flathead screws, this was partly a result of getting the bearings to work.
      • The middle bearings get pressed in on the bottom and can be pushed out with the hole on the outside.
        • 
        • This is typically the configuration I run with bearings and bushings.  The bears can have the screws tight, but the bushings will need you to back off just a hair till they start spinning.
          • 
      • Stacking still works the same as before.

Update: 2026-04-28

• Made a few changes
  • Now designed to support up to cable with an OD of 6mm.  Includes updated base, cable pinches, and support bar.
  • Created a stackable addon to all you to stack them or any other gridfinity items.
    • The required cable pinch and support bar are part of the base set now. 
    • Requires 4x M3 Flat Head Screws and that are between 6mm and 9mm long.  You can probably get a 5mm long to work but I would just recommend 6 or 8mm long. 
    • It is designed to be a separate piece that can be removed as need to wind the spool.  The pinch for this leaves room in the middle of it to still be able to pull cable through with it installed. 
    • The grid is a modified version of my Heavy Press In Magnet base.

  • We've gone to a 3x3 base which makes it about 19u heigh
  • Slide in magnets on the bottom
  • Multiple cable pinch options and open to making more if need be. 
  • We have a Single full size spool option and a double spool option.
  • Spools still use the same male thread for both configurations.
  • Spools all still use the same 6mm allen to drive them on the side for winding the spool. 
• Assembly
  1. Start with 1 side cover and install all 4 screws.
  2. Assembly the desired spools.
  3. Screw on the other side cover with the remaining 4 screws. 
• Estimated Capacity
  • Estimated spool capacity (based on [https://telecom.samm.com/cable-reel-calculator](https://telecom.samm.com/cable-reel-calculator) ).  I also made the chart based on wire sheath dia since difference coatings produce different diameters.   This is very dependent on how well you can wind the spool.  A bad winding will lower these numbers very aggressively.
