Junco Open-Front Nest Platform
An ornithologically optimized nesting shelf for Dark-eyed Juncos and other low-nesting songbirds.
About This Model
Unlike most backyard birds, juncos don't use enclosed nest boxes — they're ground and low-cover nesters that build open cup nests tucked under vegetation, along banks, or beneath logs. This platform gives them a sheltered, weather-protected spot to nest while keeping all the features they actually want: open front, low profile, and a snug interior that feels like a natural recess.
Every dimension was chosen with junco biology in mind. The 152 × 152 mm (6" × 6") interior floor is roomy enough for the nest cup and a full brood of chicks, but compact enough to feel secure. The 120 mm walls retain nesting material without enclosing the space. The sloped roof sheds rain naturally (10 mm pitch, back to front) and the 22 mm front overhang keeps the nest entrance dry even in wind-driven rain. Integrated corbel brackets at each front corner of the roof reinforce the overhang and eliminate any floating geometry.
Features
- Open-front design — matches junco nesting instincts; no entrance hole required
- Sloped roof with overhang — passive rain shedding, no pooling
- Integrated corbel brackets — reinforce the roof overhang at each front corner; zero floating geometry
- 4 × ⌀8 mm drainage holes — floor corners, prevent water logging
- 2 × ⌀5.5 mm mounting holes — sized for #10 wood screws or M5 bolts, through the back wall
- 6 mm wall thickness throughout — strong enough for multi-season outdoor use
- No supports needed — back-wall-down orientation means the roof builds last with no unsupported geometry
Print Settings
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Material | PETG (recommended for UV/moisture resistance) or PLA |
| Orientation | Back wall flat on build plate — open face pointing up |
| Layer height | 0.2 mm |
| Infill | 30%, gyroid or grid |
| Perimeters/walls | 3+ |
| Supports | None required |
| Estimated print time | ~8–10 hours (0.4 mm nozzle) |
| Filament estimate | ~250–280 g |
Orientation note: The STL is pre-oriented with the back wall as the base. Drop it straight into your slicer and print as-is — no rotation needed. In this orientation the roof overhang is the final section to print and builds naturally off the side walls, so there is no cantilever or floating geometry to worry about.
Material note: PETG holds up significantly better outdoors than PLA. If printing in PLA, apply an exterior-rated spray sealant before installation and plan to reprint every 1–2 seasons depending on sun exposure.
Dimensions
| Overall (W × D × H) | 164 × 144 × 180 mm |
| Interior floor | 152 × 152 mm (6" × 6") |
| Wall height | 120 mm |
| Roof overhang | 22 mm |
| Roof pitch | 10 mm drop (back to front) |
Installation
Mount the platform 15–30 cm (6–12") off the ground on a post, fence, or tree trunk. The key is concealment — juncos are shy, wary birds. Tuck the platform into or directly behind dense low vegetation: the base of a shrub, a brush pile, a hedgerow, or a garden bed with tall ground cover.
Orient the open face toward the interior of the planting rather than open sky, and avoid south-facing exposure in hot climates (morning sun is fine). Remove old nesting material at the end of each season with a stiff brush and let dry fully before re-mounting.
Also Attracts
With the right habitat nearby, this platform may also be used by Song Sparrows, Fox Sparrows, Eastern Towhees, and other low-nesting species with similar preferences.
Designed with ornithological nesting data for Dark-eyed Juncos (Junco hyemalis). STL generated parametrically; all geometry verified watertight.
