MagLock Passport Case

This is the first experimental version of a passport holder I designed. I am releasing this beta version because I think some people might enjoy printing and using it, even though it may not be for everyone, myself included.

Below is a list of the main pros and cons of the design so you can decide whether it suits your needs. If you enjoy trying new ideas and being an early adopter, feel free to print it out and give it a try. You might end up liking it more than expected!

Pros:

• Unique construction – The case is made from two identical pieces that snap together like a puzzle, creating a precise and satisfying fit.
• Rugged feel – The holder feels very solid and substantial. While that may be a bit overkill for a passport, it will definitely keep it well protected.
• Great for two-color printing – Since the design uses two separate pieces, you can easily print them in different colors without a purge tower and with zero material waste.
• Completely support-free – The model is designed with no overhangs, making it fully supportless and very reliable to print.
• Magnets! – Because honestly, who doesn’t love magnets? They add a satisfying snap and help keep the case securely closed.

Cons:

• Material flex when opening – Because the pieces are fairly large, overcoming the magnetic attraction when opening can cause some noticeable flex in the plastic, which may not feel great.
• Two-piece design – The case separates into two halves, so when it is open you will need to hold both pieces, which can be a bit inconvenient when traveling.
• Passport may slide out – The passport can potentially fall out when the case is opened if you are not careful.
• Alignment needed when closing – You need to make sure the passport is positioned correctly before closing the case.
• Bulkier than typical passport holders – The rugged construction makes it thicker and chunkier than most standard passport cases.

Good to Know:

• Magnets required – This design uses 8 × 6×3 mm magnets. Please refer to the polarity diagram when installing them to ensure correct alignment.
• Capacity – The internal thickness is 12 mm, which fits two 40-page Canadian passports perfectly.
• Printing tip – Let the print cool down completely before removing it from the build plate to help prevent warping.
