DIY Precision Screwdriver & Bit Holder ( I-FIXIT )
After losing my iFixit screwdriver, I decided to design and print my own. This project includes a simple screwdriver body and a compact bit holder that can be easily printed and assembled.
Magnets
The screwdriver is designed to use small magnets to hold the bit in place.
- Magnet size: 5 mm diameter, 1 mm thickness
- Insert 2–3 magnets into the slot in Part 1 (the screwdriver body).
- The exact number depends on the final position of the pipe.
- Simply test how many magnets work best so that Part 2 (the pipe) sits correctly and does not stick out.
Once you find the correct number:
- Insert the magnets into Part 1.
- Apply a small amount of super glue.
Push Part 2 (the pipe) fully into the screwdriver body until everything sits flush.
Bit Holder Fit
The bit holder is designed with tight tolerances so that the bits stay securely in place.
If a bit is too tight:
- Carefully warm the bit slightly with a lighter (not the holder, since it is made of plastic).
- Then slowly push the warm bit into the holder.
This allows the plastic to adapt slightly to the exact size of the bit and creates a perfect custom fit.
If you skip this step, you may need pliers to remove the bit later.
Important
Only warm the bit very gently. Too much heat could damage the printed part.
Enjoy your custom screwdriver!
