Each disk represents a fraction of a whole:
 - 1/2 — the largest disk, half of the whole
 - 1/4 — half the size of 1/2
 - 1/8 — half the size of 1/4
 - 1/16 — the smallest disk, showing just how tiny a sixteenth really is

Stack them, compare them, rearrange them — children can see that two 1/4 disks equal one 1/2, and that the pieces follow a clear halving pattern. It turns an often confusing concept into something you can hold in your hands.
