Flex Orb 12-Sided Die

Introducing the Flex Orb 12-Sided Die, a practical addition to the Flex Orb collection. This model keeps the familiar size of the original Flex Orb, about 8 cm in diameter, and adds a functional twist: it serves as a twelve-sided die, with each face displaying numbers from 1 to 12.

The design is thoughtful, with each number accompanied by a corresponding pattern of raised pips, reminiscent of traditional dice, to aid in identification and add a tactile element. The surface features a subtle moiré pattern in black, white, and grey, providing a textured feel and a visual depth that complements the overall design.

This Flex Orb variant maintains the essence of its predecessors, being easy to print and assemble, while offering a new functional use. As a blend of decorative art and utility, the 12-Sided Die Flex Orb stands out for its understated design and practical application. It's an interesting piece for those who enjoy 3D printing and gaming, providing a unique, hand-crafted tool for play or display.

Customizing & Printing

The default design features a black background with a grey moiré pattern and white for the numbers and pips, using matte PLA colors from Bambu Labs. However, you're welcome to experiment with different color schemes. For clarity, choose a number color that contrasts with the background to enhance readability.

If you are not using a print profile, the initial color is black and the color changes occur at 0.50 mm for grey and 0.60 mm for white.

Note: It's important to use flexible filament. While PLA generally works well, some types can be brittle and may crack. To avoid this, use a more flexible PLA or switch to PETG filament, which offers better flexibility and durability for folding.

Assembly

For a visual guide on how to assemble the Flex Orb 12-Sided Die, check out the assembly video. But, if for some reason, you aren't able to view the assembly video, here are the steps in pictures.

Layout the strips with 1,2,3 at the bottom.

Make sure the 4 dots are next to the #4 and the 12 dots are next to the #12.

Insert the 3rd strip through the left side.

Bend it up and insert it through the right side.

Connect the ends of the 3rd strip at the top.

Rotate the 3rd strip's seam clockwise so it is hidden on the right.

Now you just start folding in all the flaps.

Make sure the curved folds on all 3 strips meet at a point.

You may have to pull hard to make the gap large enough so you can fold in the flap.

All 12 flaps have been folded in. Your die is complete.

March 23rd, 2024 - Trimmed the corners of each strip slightly so they can fit (just barely) on an A1 Mini's print bed. Created a print profile for A1 Minis with AMS.
