Description

This is a remix of Morgan Manly’s original Split Flap Display.  I’ve redesigned the enclosure to be square. I’ve also added a couple changes to make the SFD more reliable. This enclosure is (currently) only compatible with the 37 flap SFD version. All core components from the original project should be compatible, beside the end caps.

Enclosure Enhancements

• The enclosure is more compact than the original.
  • Removed a couple mms off the height.
  • Narrowed the enclosure to remove excess space between the character drum and the inner enclosure walls. This helps with magnet detection and looks better.
• I’ve added a ‘flap ramp’.
  • This adds just enough force to make the flaps flip forward on their own (as opposed to relying on gravity) as they’re rotated past the front lip. This improves SFD accuracy as flaps are less likely to get stuck.

Recommendations

• If you use Jordan Hoff’s Metal Dowel Mod (which I highly recommend), then you can use the included center gear with a built in spacer. This will correctly align the character drum.
• The print quality of the character drum makes a huge difference in overall SFD accuracy, you can use my character drum tools to help with that.
