Description
This is a remix of Morgan Manly’s original Split Flap Display, focused on improving the print and build quality of the character drum component. These tools have helped me print and assemble multiple character drums with near perfect quality.
Motivation
The quality of the character drum is a big factor in overall SFD accuracy. A bad character drum is the common reason for flaps being +1 or -1 character when flipping to a specific character.
- Imperfections in the small flap holes can lead to flaps getting stuck or being crooked.
- If the magnet is not aligned and completely flat in the magnet hole, it can lead to missed/inaccurate hall sensor readings or the magnet getting stuck on the enclosure wall.
Character Drum Changes
- I’ve pre-split the character drum for easier printing.
- Printing both outer walls face down will improve the print quality of the small flap holes. The downside is you’ll have to glue the two pieces back together.
- Most slicers should be able to cut the character drum if you want to try a different cut type/placement.
Character Drum Tools
- Brace
- This guide will align the two character drum pieces in place as you glue them back together, as well as making them easier to clamp.
- Magnet Guide
- This guide will ensure the magnet is flat as you glue and clamp it in.
- Ensure the magnet you glue into the guide is the correct orientation.
Assembly Instructions
- Add glue to the top of each halve, position them together, and attach the brace.
- Add glue to the magnet hole, place a magnet in the magnet guide hole, align the magnet and place the guide on top of the character drum.
- Clamp the character drum with the magnet guide together to dry.
Assembly Materials
- Super Glue
- 1 x N52-D3x1mm Magnet
