Descrição

Tessara

A meditative fidget toy that grows like a crystal.

Tessara is a spatial assembly system built on tetrahedral logic.

Unlike Atom, which emphasizes structural clarity and functional application, Tessara explores a more decorative, playful, and emergent direction of form.

It is primarily a tactile desk object — a modular fidget for hands and mind. The system invites experimentation and quiet interaction, offering a way to explore spatial relationships through touch and assembly. Those who enjoy pushing geometric systems may also discover unexpected structural behaviors.

If your interest leans toward more linear and utilitarian construction logic, you may want to explore Atom.

The modules naturally form stable five-element rings. These rings can interconnect into larger compositions. However, such configurations do not fully align with the inherent geometric constraints of the tetrahedral units. As additional rings are introduced, internal tension gradually accumulates.

For this reason, pursuing fully closed spherical or perfectly self-contained forms using only the current modules is not recommended — such constructions have no geometric resolution within this system.

Future expansion elements with adjusted geometry are planned for more complex enclosed spatial configurations.

Despite this limitation, Tessara readily supports extended lattice formations, including diamond-inspired crystalline structures that can grow to considerable scale and complexity.

Tessara does not prescribe final forms.

It provides a framework in which structure emerges through interaction.

What will you build?

Possible directions of exploration

As a tactile object, Tessara works as a meditative desk sculpture — a kinetic form that can be assembled, reconfigured, and allowed to “rest” in different spatial states.

In larger quantities, it becomes a laboratory for spatial exploration — enabling lattice formations, reef-like growth patterns, and crystalline arrangements that evolve organically from simple rules.

When printed in translucent materials or combined with internal lighting, Tessara can transform into a modular light structure — shifting from toy to atmospheric object.

Certain configurations naturally generate cavities and voids, allowing the system to function as an organic container for small everyday objects — jewellery, dice, keys, or tea lights.

It may also serve as an educational model, demonstrating tetrahedral logic, geometric tension, and emergent spatial behaviour through direct interaction.

Tessara adapts to scale, material, and intention.

Assembly tip

For easier assembly, you may start with a minimal structural cluster composed of eight Tessara modules.
This compact unit forms a stable base that can then be expanded by connecting additional clusters together.

Material note

Tessara modules have been tested in two types of PLA and should not present connection issues under standard printing conditions.
However, tolerances may vary depending on printer calibration and material choice. If you experience fitting inconsistencies, feel free to report them — adjustments and refinements can be made if necessary.

Printing profile

The included printing profile contains two build plates:

– a test plate with a single module for initial calibration. Printing a few pieces first is recommended to verify proper fit and connection tolerances.
– a sequential plate configured for printing five modules.

If needed, additional modules can be arranged manually on the build plate for simultaneous printing. You may decide how many parts to produce in one session. When printing larger batches at once, ensure strong bed adhesion to avoid compromising multiple parts in case of detachment.

A brim is already enabled in the profile to improve adhesion and increase the likelihood of successful print completion. If you are using enhanced adhesion methods (textured plate, adhesive solutions, etc.), the brim can be disabled manually in the print settings.

If your interest leans toward more linear and utilitarian construction logic, you may want to explore Atom.
