I created these magnetic blocks as a request from my kids and they ended up being a big hit.
I wanted to add a blocky texture to the blocks, to have a nice tactile feel, which can only be achieved by having the wrapper interior face-down on the print plate. This meant that I wasn't able to add protrusions to enable the wrapper to ‘click’ into the inner block and avoid having to use glue. Ultimately it's a trade-off. It takes a while to glue the blocks (buying cheap clamps is worthwhile for gluing en masse), but the end result is nicer. I created about 200 blocks in the run up to Christmas and my kids and nephews had great fun creating their builds. I have uploaded photos of their designs.
For flexibility, I didn't just stick with cubes. I also created stairs, a flatter block for ladders, trapdoors etc., a flatter, double-height block for doors, and finally a small flatter block for signs.
I have many block "wrappers", such as cobblestone, oak planks and water, and plan to create more. If you have an suggestions please let me know.
The magnets I use are 5mm ball magnets. I bought a lot of them from several different suppliers on Aliexpress. The ones I bought came in a cube of 216 balls and were between £4 and £5. I have noticed that they are harder to get hold off in the UK, due to import restrictions being tightened up, but the rules will vary by country.
The Minecraft models used in some of the photos are by Kirimba, so please take a look at his page to see a huge range of models you can print. Generally speaking they need to be re-sized to about 70%. I will add profiles to his page where I have re-sized and removed the keychain holes.
