Welcome to the MakeModular System!

First and foremost, this not just a storage board system. All accessories can be be centred around the drawers instead, completely independently from the boards, or you can even mount all the accessories directly to a flat surface without the boards or drawers! It's just a truly modular system for as many storage applications as possible.

Description

A while ago I went searching for a storage solution to print for a handful of areas around my house, and I found myself  spending far too long contemplating the trade-offs and compromises between what is currently available. I spat the dummy and thought, heck, why not try my hand at designing one myself that doesn't have the compromises. This is the result!

But storage boards already exist? Why chose this one?

Storage boards do exist, and they're great, but I've had a red hot crack at making this one better. 

The other differentiating factor is that other systems are centred around the boards, whereas the MakeModular system can be centred around the boards or the drawers, so you can have one of the other, or a combination of the two, or even neither, and still enjoy the benefits of all the accessories!

Objectives I had while designing:

• Strength, 
• Symmetry (for my fellow OCD friends out there)
• Modularity
• Ease of installation
• Ease of use
• Facilitates changing your mind and reconfigurations (this was a must for myself personally lol)
• Diversity of applications

Notable features:

• Threads
  • Unique and manually designed thread that is highly optimised for strength and the 3d printing process.
• Flush mounts
  • So they don't get in the way!
• Infinite modularity 
  • Build, build more, re-arrange, and build again. Universal parts with a high degree of freedom.
• High customisability
  • If it can be customised, I have uploaded a MakerWorld-based configurator so you can tailor parts to exactly how you need them to be

Having said all that, the one design objective that was absolutely non-negotiable was: infinite combinations for infinite applications, making it the storage solution for all storage needs.

The system has been optimised for any flat surface: on top, on the side or, or underneath. If any orientation, it is strong, convenient, easy and practical. 

System Constituents

While not neccessarily required, the two main building blocks for this system are the boards and drawers.

With the following combinations, you can attach just about anything to just about anything.

Configurators

I have uploaded some configurators (beside the download button) for the boards and drawers so you can acquire whatever shape you desire!

  • Square or rectangular cut-outs customisable in the configurator. If you need any other weird and wonderful shapes cut-out, I have a single-purchase service you can submit your dimensions and I can supply corresponding boards.
• Custom stacks
  • Want to print multiple boards at once? My configurator lets you choose how many you want to print, and how far apart you want them to be printed. 
• Trimming of board edges

Bonus

Change your mind about the drawer size you're after? The ratios are the same up and down as they are side to side, so just turn your already printed frame and print a new drawer to turn it on its side!

Configurator Instructions - Important!

• Download models from the configurator as 3MF, otherwise you will not be able to orient them properly in Bambu Studio
  • Once you load the 3MF into Bambu Studio, do the following:
    • Synchronise filament with AMS to give filament selections
    • In the ‘Objects’ tab, right click and split the body into parts (not objects!!!)
    • Change and assign filaments as necessary (for example, I use PLA for the boards and PETG for the supports in between).
• Once loaded into Bambu Studio, right click on the main body an split into constituent bodies

Printing Advice

• I recommend printing the tools and the join bolts in PETG due to better layer adhesion, which will make the system stronger. Just make sure you dry the PETG first.
• If you are printing stacks of boards, you should either adjust or turn off the aux fan or you put a diffuser on it. Because they are wide and flat, and use a different material for support, the aux fan can cause a little bit of warping on that side if you're not lucky.
  • This is the one I use, and I can confirm that it stopped the aux fan messing with my stacked prints: P1S X1C Fan Deflector
  • This can also happen when leaving the printer door ajar. You may want to leave the top enclosure piece ajar instead. 

FAQs

Okay, so how is the system structured?

I originally intended to release this to only my Patreon members. But after spending so much time on it, and with it growing to such a vast system, I wanted it to become available to anyone who wants to use it, without having to charge for it. So I've uploaded the system here for free for personal use. 

Can I sell this?

You may use the boards and joins commercially if you join an appropriate membership through my Patreon, everything else is completely open and fair game for whatever you want to do with them!

The system doesn't have what I need, can I make and publish derivatives and my own designs?

Similar to the commercial structure, the boards and joins are to not to be redistributed or augmented, everything else is entirely open and fair game to do with what you please!

In fact, I'll include step files of all the joins to make it easier for you all to make your own designs.
