🔧 Precision Clearance Test Gauge – Fine Increment Fit Testing
This is a compact, print-friendly clearance test gauge designed to help dial in real-world fit tolerances more accurately than most existing models.
After testing several clearance tools already available online, I found that many only check fit in 0.05 mm increments. In practice, that jump was too coarse:
- 0.05 mm often felt too tight
- 0.10 mm felt noticeably loose
I wanted something more refined — so I designed this.
🎯 Why This Gauge Is Different
This model allows you to test smaller, more useful clearance steps, making it easier to identify the actual sweet spot for your printer, filament, and settings.
It’s especially helpful for:
- Press fits
- Snap fits
- Sliding parts
- Multi-part assemblies
- Tolerance-sensitive designs
If you’ve ever thought “one size is too tight, the next is too loose”, this gauge is for you.
🔎 Clearance Labeling (Important Note)
All labeled clearances on this gauge represent per-side clearance, not total clearance.
For example:
- 0.05 mm means 0.05 mm clearance on each side
- This results in a total clearance of 0.10 mm
So a nominal 10.00 mm cylinder will slide into a 10.10 mm hole when testing the 0.05 mm clearance.
This approach reflects how tolerances are typically applied in CAD and makes it easier to translate results directly into real designs.
🖨 How to Use
- Print the gauge using your normal material and settings
- Test each peg / slot combination
- Note where the fit transitions from tight → ideal → loose
- Use that value as your baseline clearance when designing parts
Because tolerances vary by:
- printer
- filament
- temperature
- flow calibration
…it’s best to treat this as a printer-specific calibration tool.
🧠 Design Notes
- Designed to print flat on the build plate
- No supports required
- Compact footprint
- Clear labeling for easy reference
- Ideal as a quick re-print whenever you change filament or settings
🏁 Final Notes
This gauge was designed out of practical frustration — not theory.
If you care about clean fits without trial-and-error, this tool will save you time.
If you end up finding a clearance that works especially well on your setup, feel free to share it in the comments — that info helps everyone.
Happy printing.
