🤖 Bobble‑Rob: Fully Printable Tech Bobblehead
Bobble‑Rob is a fully 3D‑printable bobblehead, inspired by my 30+ years working in tech and a moment of inspiration aboard a cruise ship that had carousel horses on display. Every part of this model — except the spring — is already included in the STL and 3MF files. No extra downloads are required.
This project blends character design, mechanical function, and a lot of trial‑and‑error into a fun, desk‑worthy bobblehead.
🔧 Design Journey
This is only my second Blender project, and it took:
- 10 iterations in MakerLab
- Months of design, testing, and refinement
- Many redesigns in Blender to get the spring tension, head balance, and support strategy just right
MakerLab and PrintU made it possible to iterate quickly, and Blender gave me the freedom to sculpt and refine the character.
🧠 Technical Highlights
- Everything is included Except the Spring: head, body, supports, and print‑ready arrangements are all inside the provided STL and 3MF files.
- Fully printable spring is built directly into the model.
- Special thanks to the creator of the Printable Spring Configurator for making a printable spring design possible.
- MakerLab’s PrintU was used throughout the process to create an easy‑to‑use interface and speed up iteration.
- Head printed upside down to avoid support scarring in the hair.
- Required a custom support force torus under the crown to ensure supports generated cleanly and prevented head tipping.
- Head supports were carefully separated to avoid fusion and preserve flexibility.
🖼️ Inspiration
The spark for this design came from a cruise ship display of carousel horses — full of charm and character. I wanted to capture that feeling and mix it with my tech background, resulting in a bobblehead holding a sign that reads: “DID YOU REBOOT IT?” A perfect nod to decades of tech support moments.
🧵 Printing Notes
- Designed for Bambu P1S and P2S with a 0.4 mm nozzle
- PLA and PETG both work well
- Textured PEI plate recommended
- Layer‑by‑layer print sequence used for optimal support placement
- All parts included — no external downloads needed
- The compression spring used is .5x6x20mm (there are parametric springs on maker world)
🧪 What’s Next
My first Blender project is still in progress: a Rose‑themed picture/clock frame, waiting on a specific filament color from Bambu.
💬 Final Thoughts
This project was a joy to build and a challenge to perfect. If you love character printing, mechanical prints, or just want a fun tech‑themed bobblehead for your desk, Bobble‑Rob is ready to bounce.
