Descrição
About this project This is the first model I’ve uploaded to MakerWorld and my first deep dive into OpenSCAD. I’m a computer engineer, and while organizing my art tools with the Gridfinity system, I wanted an automated way to handle different pencil and marker sizes without searching for a new model every time.
I tried a few existing generators, but found them tedious or lacking specific features I needed. My goal was to build a solution that stops wasting filament—instead of bulky bins, this script generates "filament-saver" trays tailored exactly to the tool size.
Version History
- v1.5 (Current): Added "Thin Wall" (1.2mm) presets for every tool. These print 30% faster and use less material while maintaining magnet retention.
- v1.4: Validated dimensions for Posca caps and rounded slot ends to ensure zero collisions.
- v1.3: Corrected base geometry to strictly follow the Gridfinity standard (1.8mm vertical wall).
- v1.2: Added precision M3 screw bores for weighted bases.
The "Easy-Grab" Geometry
The main issue with standard bins is that pencils sit flat on the bottom, making them hard to pick up. This model uses capsule-shaped slots (rounded at the ends). This creates a "teeter-totter" effect—push down on one end of the pen, and the other end pops up. No more digging with your fingernails.
Features
- Rugged vs. Thin: Choose 2.4mm walls for heavy-duty daily use, or 1.2mm walls for maximum speed and efficiency. (1.2mm is exactly 3 perimeters on a standard 0.4mm nozzle).
- Snap-Fit Magnets: The holes have "crush ribs" built-in. You can press 6x2mm magnets in by hand and they’ll stay via friction. No superglue required.
- Weighted/Skeleton Support: Includes M3 screw bores inside the magnet pockets for compatibility with skeleton frames or weighted baseplates.
- Custom Rib Height: You can lower the dividers between pencils (Rib_Height_Trim) to make it easier to pinch and grab thicker markers.
Optimized Profiles (Presets)
I’ve pre-tuned the included profiles to be as filament-efficient as possible. Each is available in Rugged or Thin variants:
- Standard Pencils (Hex or Round #2)
- Mechanical Pencils (Rotring, Pentel, etc.)
- Gel Pens (Pilot G2)
- Sharpies (Fine Point)
- Thick Markers (Expo / Dry Erase)
- Posca Markers (Full Range 1M - 17K)
- Copic Sketch Markers
How to Customize
If your tool isn't in the list, you can use the OpenSCAD Customizer. Rule of Thumb: Measure your pen's diameter, divide by 2, and add 0.3mm.
How to use it: If you’re using a custom tool, measure the diameter, divide by 2, and add 0.3mm for the radius. If you want the dividers to be lower than the pencils for a better grip, set the Rib_Height_Trim to a negative value (like -1.0).
Common Tool Dimensions Reference
Note: The "Recommended Radius" includes a small tolerance (+0.2mm to +0.5mm) so the tools slide in easily.
| Tool Type | Brand / Example | Actual Diameter | Set Radius To |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Pencil | Yellow #2 (Hexagonal) | ~7.0 mm | 3.8 mm |
| Colored Pencil | Prismacolor Premier | ~7.5 mm | 4.0 mm |
| Mechanical Pencil | Rotring 600 / Pentel P205 | ~8.5 mm | 4.5 mm |
| Ballpoint Pen | Bic Cristal / Round Stic | ~8.2 mm | 4.3 mm |
| Gel Pen | Pilot G2 | ~11.0 mm | 5.8 mm |
| Fine Liner | Sakura Pigma Micron | ~9.5 mm | 5.0 mm |
| Permanent Marker | Sharpie Fine Point | ~12.0 mm | 6.5 mm |
| Thick Marker | Expo Dry Erase | ~16.0 mm | 8.5 mm |
| Art Marker | Copic Sketch (Oval) | ~15.0 mm (Widest) | 8.0 mm |
| Utility Knife | X-Acto Knife (Handle) | ~8.0 mm | 4.5 mm |
Posca Marker Guide
I've measured the entire Posca range to save you time. Use these settings for a perfect fit that accommodates the cap diameter and the rounded slot ends:
| Model | Tip Size | Cap Ø | Set Radius To | Set Length To |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PC-1M | Extra Fine | ~13.0 mm | 6.8 mm | 128 mm |
| PC-3M | Fine | ~15.3 mm | 8.0 mm | 150 mm |
| PC-5M | Medium | ~18.5 mm | 9.6 mm | 150 mm |
| PC-8K | Broad | ~24.4 mm | 12.5 mm | 132 mm |
| PC-17K | Extra Broad | ~28.5 mm | 14.6 mm | 166 mm |
Note: For the larger markers (PC-8K and PC-17K), I recommend setting Rib_Height_Trim to -2.0 so you can easily grab them.
Pro Tip for Rib Height:
- Negative Value (e.g., -1.0): LOWERS the dividers below the pencil. Best for grabbing thick markers.
- Positive Value (e.g., 1.0): RAISES the dividers. Best for keeping thin tools deeply separated.
Print Settings
- Supports: None.
- Infill: 10-15% (Gyroid or Grid recommended).
- Walls:
- For "Rugged" Presets: 3 Walls.
- For "Thin" Presets: 3 Walls (results in solid 100% walls for the 1.2mm shell).
