This addictive game of roll the dice for a total then drop the tile or tiles to match the sum is based off a wood game called Shut the Box. The original comes with 9 wood tiles and no storage box. I decided to created a 12 tile version with a box that can close so it could stored or be portable. I wanted it to be simple and not overly complicated. My box design does not have a closing latch - just use a rubber band to keep it shut. If there is a need i can create a closing mechanism later.
Here are the steps of assembly.
Step 1: Print out all items and get some discarded or extra filament (2 pieces)

Step 2 - Start the Tile assembly. Each tile has a 2.2mm hole thru the base to allow the filament to pass thru and the supports also have the same hole size.

Keep going - you will get there, try sticking out your tongue - it helps ;)

When done it should look like this. Be sure to trim the filament flush with the sides of the assembly. Very important for the next step

Step 3 - Install the tile assembly into the upper lid.
Note: If you have elephant foot issues you will need to remove them before assembling the box and lid. The tolerances are tight because i did not what to glue it together. It is a press fit.

it is flush when done.

Step 4 - Assemble the Box bottom lid to the upper assembly using a piece of filament as a hinge pin.

I find it easier to pass the filament thru if you partially fold the two halves together, about 15 - 20 degrees from laying flat.

Be sure to trim off the excess filament
Step 5 - Add your dice. The dice for this design is 9.5 x 9.5 x 9.5 mm to fit the box when the lid is closed.

I added a nice little storage box for the dice when the lid is closed.

So now you have it. Play the game to your hearts content. Kids love it and it has a Math structure for the kids to learn addition and subtraction. The rules are very simple. Play singly or with 2 or more players.
A - Roll your two dice
B - Total or add the two dice numbers together to get a working value.
C - Lay down the tile that matches that value or a combination of tiles that match the total of the working value.
D - Repeat steps A - C until you can not lay any tiles down.
E - When you can not lay down any more tiles, then your turn is over, add up the tiles still standing - that is your score in the game. The lowest score wins the game.
Hint - It is best to try and lay down your high number tiles first because they do the most score damage.
Hint - Search the web for more ways to play by looking up Shut the Box game play.
Hint - You can play 9 tile game or 12 tile game, just laydown 10-12 before you start the 9 tile game.
I had a lot of fun creating this 3d printed version of the game. It taught me how to create hinges in the tiles and the box lid and base. I learned how to support the tiles and box using excess filament as a hinge pin. How to make and paint the dice and make it all portable.
It hopefully will keep the kids focused and having fun on those long car trips. Younger kids will learn the basics of addition and chunking (Look it up) breaking it down into manageable pieces and laying down those same tile pieces.
Have fun and stay happy.
