Working on a project and I needed a box. I've just designed one that suits my needs, it might suit yours too.
Box Dimensions:
Outer:
160mm x 98mm x 60mm (including hinge protrusion)
Inner:
154mm x 84mm x 50mm
This box is magnet closed. It's fairly large for projects but this is intentional. My plan involves mounting the main circuitry in the lid and housing the power / relays in the bottom part. This will be a highly effective use of space! It suits many small electronics projects and will fit many different small circuit boards or protoboards. The closing lid provides protection or can be used as an interface. My project requires very little in the way of interactivity, it'll just sit there and do its job, maybe twinkle an LED occasionally when its bored.
About the box closure:
this box has two magnet holders on the body and on the lid, you'll need a total of four magnets! I have a pack of 5mm x 2mm round magnets here so that's what you'll need too. Smaller ones will fit if you don't mind padding them out with glue. Bigger ones will fit if you don't mind carving out a bigger gap for them.
Magnets should just snap in place and stay put with a friction fit. I've found that transparent PLA can be a little stiff for this, so you can scrape it out and fix a magnet in with superglue.
Hinge:
The hinge is best finished with a length of filament, any type. Best to use a length that matches the colour of the bottom of the box since those hinge joints are on the outside of the hinge. There's a trick to them, and here it is!
- Cut a length of filament a little longer than you'd need, it needs to stick out about 8mm each side
- Get a lighter and melt the end a bit, it'll catch fire easily, don't worry but DO blow it out
- Squash the filament flat using something metal that's also flat, I use the side of a craft knife blade
- Do the same on the other side
Your hinge will come out looking as pictured, it works much easier than you'd think and produces a very nice round flat disc that sticks to the box very nicely. Once its in, it's in. It's easily robust enough to last a long time, doesn't require metal fasteners, and matches the box so well that its hard to notice that it's actually got something running through the whole way. I love this method of hinging boxes.
Mounting Circuit Boards:
The next version will come with mounting positions. Those are easily added by adding primitive cylinders with negative primitive cylinders to the base to make screw posts. My preferred method is to melt brass offset posts directly in to the plastic of the box. Works every time that way with perfect positioning.
Best Practices for Printing:
This is best either by object depending on your plate size or as two separate plates. There is no need for the AMS for this, in fact it would be hugely wasteful in time and filament! This is an enclosure, it doesn't need to be silky smooth or maximum fancy. I printed the one in the pictures at 0.24mm draft quality on the Bambu A1. It came out great first try even with a transparent lid.
