In a part of the ocean where direction stops making sense, something lives in a cave that does not quite stay in the same place.

It has the body of an octopus.

Where its head should be, there is the shape of a human head — smooth, pale, eyes closed, as if sleeping.

And on each of its eight tentacles, there is a smaller version of the same head.

Nine faces.
None of them ever open their eyes.

The creature does not think of them as faces. It does not think in words at all. It moves, and the water moves differently around it, as if trying not to touch it directly.

When it drifts through the deep, other creatures slow down. Then they turn away. Later, they cannot remember why.

The cave changes sometimes. Not in a way that can be seen — in a way that can only be felt. Distances stretch. Corners feel closer. The dark presses in, then relaxes.

When it sleeps, each of the nine faces shows a different dream:

Tall empty spaces.
Straight horizons.
Echoes without sound.
Places with no water.

When it wakes, the dreams are gone.

But the water feels… slightly rearranged.

One long, quiet cycle, something changes.

Not in the creature.

Not in the cave.

In the deep.

The currents hesitate, just for a moment, as if they have received a question.

Far below, far past where light or memory should reach, something vast shifts its attention.

For the first time since the creature has existed, one of the small faces on its tentacle…

…begins to open its eyes.
