This is a generatively-designed light-duty hook designed to hang ballcaps with 18mm adjustment bands on a wall. I was inspired by NASA Goddard's Text-to-Spaceship and NASA Langley's Digital SAMARAI programs to experiment with generative design (topology optimization) at home, and decided to apply generative design to this application after failing to find much else I liked for hanging ballcaps, but weren't way overkill for the application. The 3-hook photo demonstrates the advantages of generative design: These generatively designed hooks use half the filament ( 0.72g) and prints 20% faster than the conventional design I developed first! The generative model was faster & easier to design, too.
I successfully tested them as supporting 2.5lbs (1.13kg) of load, well in excess of the 2.5oz (70g) load I designed them for. So they really could be even smaller & lighter still.
I found printing this hook on its back had the best performance, though it does have some hanging areas that do not print in the highest quality. (Printing with supports negated the filament savings and were hard to remove.) Fortunately, this hook is small enough that the bridges and overhands can be printed reasonably well in PLA, and the impacted sagging/poor adhesion areas are not critical to performance for hanging ballcaps. However, I do not expect this design will print well if scaled up as the overhangs quickly become impossible to print: These would be easily fixed with manual edits, but I wanted to share as-is. I highly recommend that instead of any derivative works, you use this inspiration to develop your own generative models! I used Siemens' Solid Edge Community for this (free for hobby use, though highly restricted in capability) but there are several other Generative platforms- ask your favorite AI Chatbot about it, they all know.
- You may need to use use Arachne if your slicer misses some elements.
- Plate 1 is a single hook.
- Plate 2 has three hooks and should be printed by sequence for maximum strength. Depending on your application, you may wish to print by layer or scale them down to get under the fouling limit.
- Plate 3 has a double-sized (200%) hook, but this is unlikely to print well in most printers or filaments.
