Many of the inserts for Bambu reusable spools have one flaw or another that makes winding filament onto them a bit of a nightmare. Either the insert has poor tolerances leading it to slide all over the spool, or the release from the insert causes kinks in the filament that get caught in the AMS primary or secondary feeders, the AMS buffer, or directly at the extruder. on top of these problems, many of the available inserts also place  the filament holes to far from the inside face of the spool leading to a lot of slop in winding that only cascades with each layer. Finally, all of the above create an overall sloppy wind on a spool that can impact accurate readings with gauges that measure remaining filament accurately. Worse yet, these winding issues can cause filament to seat against the inner faces of the spool that can push the sides of the spool out with each additional layer when neat and tightly winding spools.

 

Enter the Sidewinder spool insert!

 

I designed the Sidewinder insert so that it has the tightest possible tolerances with Bambu reusable spools, completely eliminated back and forth , as well as side to side, movement that can make winding or rewinding filament neatly difficult. Additionally, I'v incorporated an interference fit filament channel that also utalizes the tension placed on the filament while winding to make the filament to spool interface secure. Finally, as the filiment is about to run out, the friction tension is release and the filament pulls out cleanly and feeds nicely until runout.

 

As the tolerances are quite high with this adapter, please ensure the your printer and filament are well calibrated, including a skew correction

Because of the interference fit with the center of the spool, I highly suggest pushing the filament into the channel with a needle nose pliers to ensure full insertion.

 

I would suggest PLA or PETG for low temperature filaments, and PC or PA for high temp filaments to ensure the insert doesn't collapse with filament dryers, the AMS-HT or AMS 2 Pro.
