Credit to schiko for the original design of Spoolino! **Compatible with the original Spoolino**
**** I have “hopefully” fixed the issue where the print profile was not updated. I removed the profile and reloaded it, and now it is showing the correct settings. I printed a new bottom portion (the side with the curved surface) from the print profile on this page, and it printed great…see pics of the Green spool bottom. Just to be safe….PLEASE MAKE SURE the TOP LAYERS are set to 5, and INFILL is set to absolutely no less than 10%. The green version in the pics was INFILL at 12%, which was has negligible time and filament increase…so to be extra safe…use 12%****
Description
This is a remix of Spoolino by schiko. I have tried a couple of different spool adapters for 200/250g spools, and most seemed to be limited to certain spools, or where too lightweight to reliably work in the AMS 2 Pro. Spoolino was almost the perfect spool adapter:
- It is universal and could fit most/all spools due to the one-sided conical design.
- Has enough weight to not get thrown around inside the AMS when a spool was almost empty.
- It has great threads that easily go together and do not come loose.
The only problem I had with it, is that it is somewhat easy to break the male threaded shaft where it meets the spool “wheel”…especially with an AMS 2 Pro on retraction.
So, I did a quick remix of Spoolino to add a 5mm shoulder to the male threaded side. This shoulder widens the connection point to the spool “wheel” and removes the stress riser points at the shaft to wheel interface. (That is not a knock on the original design, just a side effect of having threads intersect a flat plane..there will always be stress riser points in that connection) Obviously in my remix I still have the this thread to plane interface, but it is moved 5mm away from the wheel plane and widened. The shoulder is widend to match the diameter of the female thread side. So far this has proven to do the trick. I can put a spool in Spoolino tightly and have not had any breaks during use.
This remix is fully compatible with the original Spoolino. If you only want to print the new male threaded side, or need to replace yours because it snapped, it will work perfectly with the original prints.
Things to be aware of:
- By adding the 5mm shoulder, this does reduce how narrow Spoolino can screw together. Obviously, you are losing 5mm of clamping, or better said, your minimum spool width has grown by 5mm. I have tested with Sunlu and Elegoo 250g spools, and it's not even close to being a problem, but if you use some really super narrow spools, it might be.
- IF you plan to use this in an AMS 2 Pro with drying, obviously you want to choose a filament that will handle the heat. Probably need to pass on regular PLA.
