These gridfinity bins are designed in three sizes:

1. 1x2 (holds 8 AA batteries)
2. 2x2 (holds 18 AA batteries)
3. 2x3 (holds 28 AA batteries)

As the diameter of batteries varies quite a bit I opted to support the bigger sized ones up to 14.5mm in diameter, which is also the normed size. However I have some AA batteries which are smaller with roughly 14mm diameter which obviously fit not as snuggly.
