One-Handed Sock Aid (Ambidextrous Options)
The Problem
Putting on socks is a significant challenge for individuals with temporary or permanent mobility restrictions. This tool is specifically designed for users who can only reach their feet with one hand, such as:
- Users with an arm in a sling or cast.
- Individuals recovering from shoulder or hand surgery
How to Use
- Preparation: Place the tool on your lap or a stable surface. Stretch the cuff of the sock over the wide "U" channel until the toe of the sock is snug against the end.
- Placement: Lower the tool using the integrated handle.
- Application: Insert your toes into the sock opening. Slide your foot forward through the channel. As your heel passes through, the sock will release from the tool and onto your foot.
Design Features
- Hand-Specific Models: The print profile includes two separate build plates. Use the Left-Hand model if you are using your left hand to reach down, and the Right-Hand model for the opposite.
- Ergonomic Geometry: The angle of the handle is optimized to reduce the required "reach-down" distance by approximately 15 cm, minimizing strain on the back and shoulders.
Print Recommendations
- Material: PETG is recommended over PLA for its slight flexibility and superior "spring" when stretching the sock over the frame.
- Supports: See the sliced 3MF for optimized orientation. Ensure that the area under the handle is supported as the model is tall and can wobble if the support area isn't wide enough
