As a software engineer, I run and maintain a bare-metal Kubernetes cluster on my mini PCs. I used to stack them on top of each other, and they would get extremely hot under heavy loads because there was almost no room for airflow. I’ve always wanted a proper server rack to solve the cooling problem for my mini PCs. I know I could buy a standard 1U rack, but those aren’t really designed for a use case like this. I also looked at many existing 3D-printed server rack projects, but none of them fully met my needs. So I decided to build one myself. After countless revisions, I’m thrilled to finally announce TinyRack – a modular mini server rack! It doesn't require any hardware (except for the leveler, but it's optional). You can read my blog article to learn more about it.
The design is inspired by wire shelving racks. I aimed to make it capable of carrying as much vertical load as possible while keeping it extremely modular, so you can build whatever size server rack fits your needs. Best of all, I’ve created an adapter that lets you connect TinyRack posts to the openGrid platform (you can find the adapter here). This means the entire openGrid ecosystem – including Underware 2.0 cable management modules – can be used with the TinyRack system. I also designed a dedicated mount for the JetKVM that sits perfectly on top of my Minisforum UM790 mini PCs (model available here).
Here's a full list of relative modes:
- openGrid - the grid system for attaching modules like cable management tools or ethernet patch panel
- openGrid-TinyRack adapter - adapter for mounting an openGrid grid on top of TinyRack's notched posts
- Ethernet patch panel - a openGrid-multiconnect based Ethernet patch panel with 8 ports
- JetKVM + DC module mount - the mount for JetKVM + its DC module
If you like the design and find it useful, please give it a like, share it with others, and feel free to extend or remix it however you’d like!
PS: For the Rubber Leveler, you can buy them from amazon here (not affiliated link)
Updates
- v1.1 Added ThreadedSnapConnector for the top panel + powered tools and manual tools for the connector and post
- v1.2.1 Rebuilt the model with Build123d, open-sourced the source code. Increase the height of top screw for posts from 10 mm to 20 mm. Now the source code and generators for making custom posts and custom panels are all available at [https://makerrepo.com/r/fangpenlin/tinyrack/releases/1067f106-674c-4ec5-9da5-5f93d1c45522](https://makerrepo.com/r/fangpenlin/tinyrack/releases/1067f106-674c-4ec5-9da5-5f93d1c45522)
- v1.2.2 Added top handle so that it's much easier to carry the rack around. The whole release, generators and source code can be found here [https://makerrepo.com/r/fangpenlin/tinyrack/releases/8e4438f2-2172-413c-ae83-6d341cc40ab3](https://makerrepo.com/r/fangpenlin/tinyrack/releases/8e4438f2-2172-413c-ae83-6d341cc40ab3)
- v1.2.3 The post labels are oriented incorrectly, causing the TinyRack logo to face the wrong direction on every other post when fully assembled. We also added a post base so that users can build a rack or structure from the ground more stably on its own, further extending the use cases of the TinyRack modules.
