The Historic Series
Little is known about the origins of this set. The maker is unknown. The set's name, if it had one, is unknown (though some have come to call it the “Egg” set). I know of only two original examples of these pieces. One is posted in the online chess museum. Another is posted on chess.com's forum.
The chess.com owner testifies that they bought their set in Palma de Mallorca decades ago.
A unique feature: All pieces in the reproduction are cut from the same oval blank (in size and shape). Therefore, because the pawn's bottom is cut closer to the center of the oval and the king's bottom is cut closer to the edge, the pawn has the widest base of the set and the king the most narrow! The queen has the second most narrow base and so on… And yet, the pieces are visually well balanced!

I took a small creative liberty with the reproduction and adorned the bishops with alternate colored heads. The alternate bishop head helps to distinguish the piece from the knight.
Instructions:
- No supports are required for the default size.
- The bishops and knights are constructed in two parts (head and body). They're intended ideally to be friction fit and not require glue. But depending on your tolerance, you may consider adding an adhesive/glue to tighten the bond.
- I recommend matte filaments, aesthetically.
- Use concentric surface pattern for a better finish on all but 1. the bottoms of the knight and bishop heads and 2. the tops of the knight and bishop bodies.
- If you're patient, I recommend you decrease the layer height for a finer resolution.
Recommend Chessboard Pairing:
- ≈ 1.5" squares: Default size
Two printer profiles: Solid Base and Hollow Base
- The solid base profile prints pieces with solid bottoms.
- The hollow base profile adds a cavity to the bottom so that you can add extra weight. I recommend adding sand, dirt, steel bb pellets, or lead weights and cover in glue, epoxy, or wood filler. Then add green felt for a nice, clean look.
