Modular Hydroponic Tower - Grow More, Use Less Space! 🌱

Hey makers! I built this modular hydroponic tower to maximize internal volume for root growth, and honestly? It's been performing way better than I expected.

I designed this whole system to be printed in SUNLU matte PETG white with 4 walls on my Bambu P1P, and let me tell you - it printed solid as a rock. You can almost squeeze out 2 sections per 1kg of filament (though your mileage may vary depending on your settings).

Why This Design Works 💧

The secret sauce here is the variable height drip holes. These help prevent root clogging AND prioritize water distribution to the plants below. It's a simple feature that makes a difference in keeping everything running smoothly.

I went with white PETG, and so far algae growth has been minimal - which was honestly one of my bigger concerns going into this. The material choice really seems to make a difference.

The Net Pot  🪴

This tower fits standard 2-inch net pots fine, they're a little loose in there. So naturally, I did what any maker would do - I built custom net pot (if you make a netter one post it I would live to update this)! 😄 It's got a rim hook to make a secure fit. You can use the standard 2-inch pots if you want, but the custom ones are there if you prefer to print your own.

Modular = Scalable

The beauty of this design is that it's modular. Start with the suggested 5 sections, or go bigger if you've got the space and a stronger pump. The silicone tubing connections make it super easy to add or remove sections as needed.

Print Settings

  • Material: SUNLU Matte PETG (White)
  • Walls: 4
  • Printer: Bambu P1P
  • Filament per section: ~600g (approximately)
    used about 4 spools

Parts List & Why I Chose Them 🛠️

Pump

Silicone Tubing - 1/2" ID x 5/8" OD (10ft)
This was perfect because it gave me some extra length to work with. Since the system is modular, this will support more than the 5 suggested sections, but you might need a stronger pump if you go big.

Stainless Steel Hose Barb Fittings - 1/2" to 1/2" NPT (Pack of 2)
You only need one, so feel free to sub this out for a food-safe plastic version if you want. I went with stainless steel and it's been working great. This is used for the top connection since the pump already has a barb fitting. You could also 3D print this, but for the price and durability, I just bought it.

BN-LINK 24 Hour Mechanical Timer
An analog timer that doesn't reset on power outages - this was key for me. The only downside is that it's 30-minute increments, which works fine for my schedule (30 on, 30 off), but you can really use any timer you like.

4-in-1 pH EC TDS Temp Meter
Essential for keeping your nutrient solution dialed in. Hydroponics is all about precision, and this meter covers all the basics.

M8 x 20mm Stainless Steel Hex Bolts (25 pack)
For attaching the base to the bucket lid. Stainless steel means no rust worries.

M8 Stainless Steel Hex Nuts
To pair with those M8 bolts for the base assembly.

General Hydroponics pH Control Kit
For keeping your pH balanced. This is non-negotiable in hydroponics - plants are picky about their pH!

MASTERBLEND 4-18-38 Complete Combo Kit (2.5 lb)
My nutrient choice. This is a popular option in the hydro community and it's been working really well for me.

10.2 Gallon Screw Top Pail with Blue Lid (Uline)
You'll need to modify the top a bit to secure the base. This food-safe bucket was a bit pricey at $50 plus $25 shipping, but it was really hard to find food-safe options over 5 gallons with a good lid. If you find a better alternative, let me know! The screw top and neoprene gasket are nice features though.

M5 x 50mm Stainless Steel Socket Head Cap Screws Kit
For connecting each section together. You could also use zip ties if you want a simpler/cheaper option.

M5 Stainless Steel Nuts
To go with those M5 bolts for section connections.

Hope this helps you grow some awesome plants! Drop your makes in the comments - I'd love to see what you build! 🌿✨
