My wife is a quilter, which means she sews a fabric "binding" around the edges of each quilt to finish it up. Many of the quilts are very large so she can have tens of feet of binding to manage as she’s sewing it on.
I designed and 3D printed a “Binding Spool” that the binding gets wound up on. Then the spool hangs on a chain around her neck and gets fed out a little at a time as she sews.
Here's how it works:
You load the spool like this:
The notch at the top prevents the binding from unravelling.
You can print this as-is for the size spool my wife uses, but I've had folks ask me for minor modifications in the past, so I made this “parameterizable”, which should let people resize it, within reason.
This is the first time I've posted a parameterized model, so please let me know if I've got some problems with it.
Parameters (all in mm):
- Diameter: Diameter of the main “shaft” of the spool
- Height: Height of the entire part
- SlotWidth: Both slots in this design use this as their width
- ArborDiameter: The vertical tunnel through the core of the spool is the “Arbor”, and this is its diameter.
Print settings shouldn't matter much – 15% infill with PLA, 2 or 3 walls has been fine, as it doesn't take much physical stress.
