The Chupacabra

Whose name comes from the Spanish words chupar (“to suck”) and cabra (“goat”)—is a legendary creature said to prey on livestock, especially goats, by draining their blood. The myth first emerged in Puerto Rico in 1995, when farmers reported mysterious animal deaths with puncture wounds and no blood left in the bodies.

Early eyewitness accounts described the Chupacabra as a reptilian creature, standing upright like a kangaroo, with spines running down its back and glowing red eyes. Later sightings across Latin America and the southern United States depicted it more like a hairless, canine-like beast, often mistaken for coyotes suffering from mange.

Though no scientific evidence supports its existence, the Chupacabra has become a staple of modern folklore—feared, debated, and even featured in films and pop culture. It’s often seen as the southern counterpart to the Sasquatch, embodying the mystery and thrill of cryptid legends
