3D model Threaded Insert Grid Board (Parametric) by roark on MakerWorld

Description

Threaded Insert Grid Board (Parametric)

A customizable OpenSCAD baseboard for prototyping and fixtures. It generates a flat, rounded-rectangle plate with a centered grid of through-holes sized for heat-set threaded inserts (any size you choose), plus optional corner mounting holes to fasten the board to a desk, plate, or frame.

Highlights

  • Centered grid: spacing-only logic auto-fits the largest, perfectly centered grid within your margins.
  • Insert-ready holes: straight through-holes with a tiny top chamfer to help start heat-set inserts.
  • Optional corner mounts: enable/disable; counterbored or plain through-holes.
  • Corner keep-out: skip grid holes near corners to avoid clashes with corner mounts.
  • Maker-friendly params: short, unit-clear controls; clean booleans; robust booleans (no “thin skins”).

Default configuration

  • Board: 170 × 170 × 8 mm, corner radius 3 mm
  • Grid: 20 mm pitch, 10 mm edge margin
  • Insert pilot: 4.1 mm (good starting point for many M3 inserts—adjust for your insert/system)
  • Corner mounts: on, offset 10 mm, counterbore 10 mm × 3 mm

Key parameters (customize via “Customize”)

  • width / height / thick – overall size (mm)
  • corner_r – corner fillet radius (mm)
  • margin – solid border from edges to grid area (mm)
  • pitch – grid spacing in X/Y (mm)
  • keepout – omit grid holes within this many mm of each corner (mm)
  • insert_d – pilot diameter for your heat-set insert (mm)
  • chamfer_on, chamfer_h, chamfer_extra – small lead-in on top face
  • mounts_on – enable/disable corner mounting holes
  • mount_off – distance from each edge to corner mount center (mm)
  • cb_on, cb_d, cb_h – counterbore options for corner mounts

Printing & assembly

  • Material: PLA, PETG, or ABS/ASA (PETG/ABS recommended for inserts).
  • Layer height: 0.2 mm (or finer for clean holes).
  • Perimeters: 4–5 walls for fastener strength; infill: 20–40% gyroid/cross-hatch.
  • No supports needed. Flat bottom for easy adhesion.
  • Insert fit: start with pilot ≈ insert spec + printer tolerance. If inserts are too tight, ream slightly or raise insert_d by 0.1–0.2 mm.
  • Raise bed temp slightly (≈ +5 °C) to improve adhesion and reduce risk of warp/lifting.
  • Heat-set tips: press inserts with a soldering iron using steady pressure; avoid over-melting. The top chamfer helps centering.

Notes

  • Works for M2–M6 heat-set inserts (adjust insert_d and grid pitch to suit hardware).
  • Corner mounts check recess clearance against the corner radius to prevent edge break-through.
  • If you disable corner mounts, the corner keep-out is ignored so you get a full grid.

Feel free to remix dimensions, pitch, or margins to match your fixtures and fasteners.
