My desk, while mostly clean, has had a neglected corner for far too long. I decided to finally fix it by creating this modular shelf. While currently limited by the number of attachments I have designed, my plan is to use this as a base platform for more of my organization needs.
I am looking to start outfitting my shelf for my office, my kitchen, and my bedroom with appropriate attachments. As I design new attachments, I will update this listing so you can easily grow your modular desk shelf alongside me.
Required Hardware
For this build, you will need the following components:
- (6x) 1/4" (6mm) Aluminum Dowel Rods (length is up to you but I suggest 16 inches)
- (4x) M4 x 12mm Socket Head Cap Screws
- (Optional) Adhesive rubber or felt feet (for the base)
Assembly Instructions
- Assemble the Base: Carefully slide each aluminum dowel rod into the appropriate recess on each leg. Note that the hole for the dowel rods is purposely sized to be as tight as possible, so you will have to be a little patient with this step.
- Attach the Shelf: Using the connector pieces with the M4 x 12mm socket head cap screws, screw the connectors onto one side of the dowel rods with the shelf on the other. I have found that loosely attaching each connector to the shelf before attaching to the dowel rods can help a bit as well.
- Affix Protective Feet: While optional, attaching the adhesive feet to the bottom of the leg pieces greatly increases the ability for the shelf to stay in place on your work surface. It reduces any sounds from vibrations as well, if you keep this shelf on the same work surface as your printer for instance.
