Descrição
For a project I am working on, I created a parametric box. I thought I might as well share that here as a scalable storage box can be quite useful.
UPDATE 26 june 2026
Upon multiple requests, I created a box with independent lid and base heights. It is not print-in-place, but very easy to assemble. So if you are looking for something like that, check it out HERE.

UPDATE 27 march 2026
I created a Drill Bit Storage box based on this model. Check it out here: [https://makerworld.com/en/models/2577023-drill-bit-storage-box#profileId-2841773](https://makerworld.com/en/models/2577023-drill-bit-storage-box#profileId-2841773)

UPDATE 29 jan 2026
- The locking mechanism (latch) has been improved. The original version snapped off too easily and the added lip (oct 25 update) also did not have the desired effect. I increased the thickness as that has been proven to work in another model (with the customizable dividers).
- I've kept the print profile of the previous version (100x60x35) so that you can still print that version. It is clearly marked as OLD VERSION
- The model in the Parametric Model Maker is with the improved latch.
UPDATE 06 oct 2025
- I added a small lip to the locking mechanism so it is easier to open the box. If you don't want this, I added a ‘Toggle switch’ so you can switch it on or off. More instructions below.
UPDATE 06 oct 2025
- I created a box with customizable compartments in both the bottom and lid. If you are looking for something like that, you can find it here: [https://makerworld.com/en/models/1859912-parametric-storage-box-with-customizable-dividers#profileId-1989142](https://makerworld.com/en/models/1859912-parametric-storage-box-with-customizable-dividers#profileId-1989142)

UPDATE 03 oct 2025
- Tolerances of the hinges have been increased based on feedback in the comments. With PLA the tighter tolerances worked fine, but with PETG there were some issues. I don't have PETG filament, so any comments on this would be welcome!
- The locking mechanism has been improved. It is now more rounded and requires less effort to open
- Changed images with pictures of the latest design (grey).
The box is a ‘print in place’ design without any assembly needed. Also, no supports are required. The box has a double hinge and has a snap-fit lock. The first time you close it might require a bit of ‘persuasion’ to free the hinges, but after that is works really smoothly. It is almost like a fidget toy: you just want to open and close it ;)
OUTSIDE DIMENSIONS:
The box can be printed in place with a double hinge between the bottom and lid. Three dimensions can be changed. To do this, click the ‘Customize’ button and the Parametric Model Maker will open:

- Box width: the width of the box. Minimal width of the box is 92 mm, otherwise the hinges won't fit. Maximum width is limited by your printer.
- Box depth: the depth of both lid and bottom. Minimal depth is 25 mm, otherwise corners won't work (and the internal space is too small). Maximum depth is limited by your printer.
- Box height: this is the TOTAL height, so bottom and lid combined. The minimal height is 35 mm, otherwise the lock won't fit.
Example: a box height of 40mm results in a lid and bottom height of 20mm each. Maximum height is limited by your printer.
All dimensions are maxed at 400 mm (more than most printers can have…).
LOCKING MECHANISM
A small recess in the bottom halve of the box catches a latch on the lid. The thickness of the latch had been increased in the January 2026 update to prevent it from snapping off too easily. The first 3 images (cover image not included) are of a box with this strengthened latch. The other images are of boxes before this update.
INSIDE DIMENSIONS:
Due to wall thickness, the inside dimensions are smaller:
- Box height: total height - 8mm; the lid and bottom have the same internal height: (Total height/2) - 4 mm
Example: a total height of 40 results in a total internal height of 32 mm. The lid and bottom internal height is 16 mm (40/2 -4); - Box width: total width - 10 mm
Example: a total width of 100 mm results in an internal width of 90 mm - Box depth: total depth - 9 mm
Example: a total depth of 80 mm results in an internal depth of 71 mm.
The bottom half has a small extruded lip (2 mm) that slots in to the lid.
If you want to create your own custom inlays, the rear corners (near the hinges) have a radius of 3 mm and the front corners (near the lock) have a 4 mm radius.
In the images attached, there are some sample sizes (H x W x D) of
- 35 x 120 x 50 mm (grey example)
- 25 x 92 x 30 mm (last image)
- 35 x 120 x 60 mm (last image)
- 40 x 172 x 90 mm (last image)
