Modelo 3D Parametric Serpentine Wave Spring por FelixTheWhale no MakerWorld

Descrição

This is a parametric serpentine wave spring with optional mounting/passthrough holes. This design allows to use the strongest dimension of 3D printers in XY direction.

It acts as a customizable compliant mechanism that can be used for compression, tension, or spacing in your projects. Customize the curve radius, number of segments to the integrated mounting holes.

This is a parametric .f3d model, that means you have to customise it yourself for your application!

Can be adjusted in the web viewer, or download and use Fusion 360 to generate the spring for your needs.

Why are the holes needed? (Potential Applications)

The holes are a key feature that transforms this from a simple spring into a functional component.

  • Secure Mounting: The primary purpose is to fasten the spring. You can easily pass screws, bolts, or zip-ties through them to attach the ends to your assembly.
  • Cable Management: The holes can serve as guides or running wires, keeping them tidy and contained within the spring's structure.
  • Assemblies: You can link multiple springs together
  • Attach other components directly to the spring's body.
  • Allows usage of a guiding rod or rail (for example, for rover suspension)
  • Why not circle, but N-gon holes? N=6 Hexagon prints worry free due to 30 degree overhangs.

How to Print

First of all, to ensure a long service life, be mindful of the material's elastic limit.

If over-flexed, all plastics will undergo permanent plastic deformation, meaning they will set into the bent position and lose their ability to spring back. The key to preventing this is to design for a small amount of flex per segment by increasing the Repeats parameter. For optimal strength, it's essential to print using only wall perimeters ("Strength" - wall loops → set to 100 for example) and disable the top and bottom solid layers in your slicer settings, as these large, flat surfaces can easily peel apart (delaminate) during use.

To increase stiffness, increase the height of the spring.

  • Use PETG or Nylon.
  • Use only wall loops
  • No top/bottom shell layers (they will likely delaminate during the usage). I can not adjust the profile in the web viewer to remove shell layers.

Measurements

All entries are in mm (metric)

Relationship between Spring Length (L) and Feature Radius (R): L = Radius * 4 + Thickness
