The Lockheed L-1011 TriStar was a three-engine, wide-body airliner produced from 1968 to 1984. While celebrated for its advanced technology, passenger comfort, and safety, the program was a commercial failure for Lockheed, leading the company to exit the commercial aviation business.

Advanced features and innovation

• Unique engine design: The TriStar's distinctive look came from its Rolls-Royce RB211 engine mounted at the tail. It used a unique S-duct air intake for a quieter cabin and smoother operation compared to its rival, the McDonnell Douglas DC-10.
• "Whisperliner": Eastern Airlines, the launch customer, nicknamed the aircraft the "Whisperliner" due to its remarkably quiet engines and interior.
• Advanced flight controls: The TriStar was the first commercial airliner capable of flying from takeoff to landing solely on its autopilot. It was also the first wide-body aircraft certified for blind landings in zero-visibility conditions.
• Below-deck galley: An innovative galley was located on the lower deck, connected to the main cabin by elevators. This freed up main deck space and allowed for faster turnaround times during meal service.
• Direct Lift Control (DLC): This system used spoilers on the wings to manage descent rate during landing, allowing for smoother, more precise approaches.
• Robust hydraulics: The L-1011 featured four independent hydraulic systems, compared to the standard three, which contributed to its strong safety record.

The Tristar also has a legend among aviation enthusiasts. It is said that the L-1011's auto land system would break the runway from the precise spot each time.
