The Ultimate Modular Gridfinity Cup Holder

Summary

Upgrade your Gridfinity setup with a robust and versatile cup holder designed to integrate seamlessly. Meticulously designed and prototyped to solve real-world stability problems, this 3x3 holder features a multi-tiered interior to securely fit a huge range of containers. This project also includes optional riser pucks for a custom fit and a dedicated 2x2 Gridfinity storage bin to store them.

Key Features

  • Multi-Tier Universal Design: The interior geometry has been carefully refined to securely hold a wide variety of containers. The multiple ledges provide a stable, flat base for everything from standard cans and bottles to large tumblers and mugs. The dimensions are specifically optimized to provide a perfect, stable fit for many popular brands of large, insulated tumblers with bases designed for automotive cup holders, which are often wobbly or unstable in generic holders.
  • Seamless Gridfinity Integration: The holder is built on a standard 3x3 Gridfinity base, standing 10 Gridfinity units tall. The base includes holes for optional 6mm x 2mm press-fit magnets, allowing it to snap securely to magnetized Gridfinity baseplates.
  • Customizable Riser Pucks: Two sizes of removable riser pucks (small and large) are included to enhance compatibility. These risers serve three key purposes:
    1. They effectively remove a ledge to solve potential instability for cups with unique base shapes.
      1. 1 small riser brings the bottom flush to the first ledge
      2. 4 large risers brings the bottom flush to the second ledge
    2. They lift containers off the bottom to keep them dry from condensation.
    3. They serve as a perfect, simple base for you to design your own custom inserts for specific cups.
  • Gridfinity Riser Storage: This system includes a stackable 2x2x5 Gridfinity bin designed to perfectly store one small riser and four large risers. As a bonus, its interior mimics the main holder, so it can be used as a secondary, more compact cup holder on its own.

About This Design

This model was developed through an iterative process of printing and testing with a variety of real-world containers. The goal was to create a robust and reliable design that solves the common wobble and instability issues found in many cup holders. The geometry has been carefully tuned to ensure a great fit for the most common beverage sizes.

Printing Instructions

  • Print Profile: For Bambu Lab users, the included .3mf print profile is pre-configured for the best results, including variable layer height on the main holder.
  • General Settings: A 0.20mm layer height is recommended for the Risers and Storage Bin.
  • Material Recommendations:
    • The original models were printed in PLA and work great for indoor use.
    • For use in a hot car or outdoors, printing the main Cup Holder and the Storage Bin in PETG, ABS, or ASA is highly recommended to prevent warping.
    • For a premium, non-slip feel, the risers could be printed in TPU. (Note: I have not personally tested this material).

Print Time & Filament Usage

(Based on default 0.20mm Standard profile on a Bambu Lab P1S)

  • Cup Holder: ~150g of filament, ~4h print time.
  • Risers (Full Set of 5): ~50g of filament, ~2.5h print time.
  • Riser storage: ~50g of filament, ~1.25h print time.

Assembly

This is a print-and-use design with no assembly required. For a secure fit with magnetized Gridfinity baseplates, 6mm x 2mm cylindrical magnets can be press-fit into the holes in the Gridfinity base.
