This project is a compact, hand-held fidget spinner based on a classical planetary (or epicyclic) gear system. The entire assembly was designed for 3D printing and print-in-place assembly of the core mechanism.
Mechanical Components:
- Ring Gear: The outer black casing, which features internal teeth. The exterior is textured with a helical gear pattern for enhanced ergonomics and aesthetic appeal.
- Sun Gear: The central gear, which is integrated into the orange planet carrier in this design.
- Planet Gears (x6): Six smaller gears that mesh simultaneously with the sun gear and the outer ring gear.
- Planet Carrier: The orange structure that holds the axles of the six planet gears, allowing them to orbit the sun gear.
Principle of Operation:
The spinner demonstrates a fundamental principle of planetary gearsets. By holding one component stationary (e.g., the outer ring gear) and applying torque to another (the planet carrier), you create a smooth, high-speed rotational motion. The gear interactions produce a visually complex and satisfying spinning action. The design was optimized to ensure minimal friction and a long spin time.
