Have the original AMS and want a drying function?
Have an AMS 2 Pro and want to dry while printing?
I had both and was inspired by these two other profiles:
Problems with Existing Models:
- Most (not the two linked) require physical irreparable mods to the AMS lid (didnt want to cut holes in my AMS)
- (1) Too tall to easily feed filament into the AMS when swapping out filament.
- (1&2) Additionally, I would often knock the polydryer out of the chock.
- (1&2) There also was no good system for holding the lid down making the seal rather poor and the dryer ineffective.
Improvements:
- This design reduces the height to allow the filament feeds to still be easily accessible and orients the poly dryer vertical to make it less likely to fall off.
- I also added features for magnets that can be used to add magnets to the lid of the AMS to lock it down (no more accidentally forgetting to pivot the lid locks!).
- The normal AMS lid locks are utilized to slide into slots on the chock to also better retain the chock in the AMS.
- Lastly tried to improve airflow as best as possible to better distribute throughout the AMS as well as have the hot air enter towards the bottom of the spool away from the feed as the reason BambuLab didnt have the 2 Pro dry while printing is it can pre-soften the filament and make it not perform properly in the extruder and nozzle. The hot air will mostly hit the filament furtherest from the feed and reduce this risk (although hot air rises so not entirely). Have been printing for over 1000 hours and have not had any issues though.
Notes:
The model uses filament modifiers as to save material I substantially reduced the infill and to maintain strength increased the number of wall loops. The filament modifiers add additional infill to have a better surface finish on the top. One modifier substantially increases the infill further to better distribute weight to help prevent tipping of the chock when the lid is removed. Lastly, the base is very small to fit inside the AMS groove, this makes the print unstable without the use of a brim and some supports; technically, the part is designed to not need any supports and so if you have really good bed-adhesion and really hate a brim and supports you can try without them but its not recommended.
Optional Hardware:
18x 10x3 neodymium magnets
2 in each of the 6 holes in the chock
1 attached to the AMS lid
Future Improvements:
- Improved lid locking features (want to make it a more snug fit and rotate bit further to make it even more secure)
- Even better weight distribution; I want this thing to never fall over
- Desiccant box add ons to the sides of the AMS (this may address item 2)
- TPU gasket for lid
