Wind-Up Dragonfly
This is a fully 3D printable wind-up dragonfly model, inspired by real dragonfly anatomy. It is available in three sizes (small, medium, and large), with increasing levels of detail as the model gets bigger.
The dragonfly uses an elastic band that hooks onto two points, rotating the front pair of wings in the opposite direction of the back pair. This counter-rotation creates forward flight. A video is included showing how to bend the wings correctly and the proper winding direction. The downloadable files also include a version where each wing is labeled with the correct bending and winding directions for easier setup.
Each size also includes a blank version without details for those without an AMS system. Recommended elastic bands are listed from Bambu Lab’s Maker’s Supply, but the model can also work with your own elastics. Experimentation is encouraged Different bands and materials can change performance.
Performance:
- Large: Can fly over 10 meters with a strong enough elastic.
- Medium: Flies for up to 5 seconds (often hitting something before that).
- Small: Very quick but short flight, requires tiny elastics.
The model works in PLA, PETG, or similar plastics. Standard PLA is slightly translucent, giving the wings a semi-transparent look. PLA Aero may also be worth experimenting with to test flight improvements.
Uses:
- Fun flying toy
- Decorative model (also available as a static decorative version)
- Can be hidden in books, shelves, or packages for a surprise
- Great for experimenting with different elastics and materials
Included are images of the largest, most detailed version.
