The basic design of this case is based on the Trackable Glasses Case by O&H, but basically everything has been changed a bit and the model has been drawn from scratch.
Update 1: Added a slim model that is 10 mm thinner. Removed the opening handle from the slim model as there is so little space for it. However it's still easy to open with the fuzzy skin.
Features in a nutshell:
- Print in place - no supports needed.
- Internal space roughly 153 x 58 x 32 mm.
- Closed with four 6x2 mm round magnets.
- Glue needed for the magnets.
- No other hardware needed.
- Separate TPU-insert included in the model.
- Changeable images for the covers. Few public domain images included.
- Fuzzy skin added to vertical external shells to improve grip.
- Can be removed easily for smooth finish.
Longer story…
My old eyeglass case broke and why would I buy one, when I can print one? I looked at and printed several models, and found that models with corner magnets work best for me. Since I had 6x2 magnets and 10x3 magnets available I landed on O&H:s Trackable Glasses Case model that used 10x3 magnets in the corners. However, I found out that 10x3 magnets were too strong for my liking and decided to change the magnets to 6x2 size. I started the design from ground up, somewhat following the original model, but at the end not much stayed the same. Compared to O&H:s model I changed the following things:
- Measurements. Case width is the same, but I increased the height a bit and reduced the depth. Most likely the angles and radiuses are different too, I didn't measure them, just followed the general vibe.
- Tracking removed. I don't have need for tracking, so I removed it. As I had no need for the space for a tracker, I also reduced the wall thickness.
- Magnets changed to 6x2, that I had available already, as it's the same size as used in Gridfinity.
- Added eyeglass image to the case, because “why not?”
- Redesigned the hinges to improve printing. Also adjusted clearances and tolerances to improve compatibility with more filaments.
- Added handles for easier opening.
- Added fuzzy skin for better grip.
I have tested printing the case in different filaments, including Bambulab PLA Metal, Bambulab PLA Wood, Bambulab PLA Silk+, Bambulab PETG-CF, Fillamentum CPE and Spectrum PLA Magic Silk. There were no issues on any of the filaments.
Printing tips:
- Just about any filament can probably be used. However, consider the storage temperatures. For example if you are going to leave the case in a hot car, don't use PLA.
- Filaments with coarse additives give a nice grippy surface. For example PLA Wood , PLA-CF and PETG-CF work great.
- The model can be printed on a 0.6 nozzle (I have tested this), but you will then see print lines on the eyeglass image. So printing with 0.6 is technically possible, but aesthetics suffer a bit.
- The TPU insert has been shrunken a bit (width and length only) on the print plate to fit it better. The settings are good for Bambulab TPU for AMS, giving a snug fit, but you might need to modify the size for other TPUs.
- As TPU for AMS is quite hard, the insert doesn't soften the case all that much, but it does give the case a bit of weight and “feeling of quality”.
- If you want to change the image for the case, you need to first split the case to objects. It's highly recommended that you merge the actual case pieces right after this without the images. This makes sure the case halves don't move in relation to each other, so that the case is still print-in-place. Technically you can print the case halves separately and combine afterwards, but this requires some force and depending on the filament might even brake something.
- If you want to print the case without the fussy skin, just select the case object, choose fuzzy skin painting tool from the toolbar and remove the paint.
