My friends and I play a good amount of poker but we would always run into the problem of decks being worn though from sweaty hands getting it gummy, dents/chips on the rims acting as tells, or glossy finishes causing shuffle fails.
No more.
Every week i would iterate the cards and bring them to the punishing gauntlet that is our home poker games. Over time, these decks have become the only ones we use. Now I can confidently say that these, for many reasons, are far superior to your average deck when using them for table games such as poker and blackjack.
Font Visibility - The font is easily legible from across even large tables. Suprisingly, this is by far the most recurring complement I've received from other players. (not elderly, mid-20s with normal eyesight)
THICK - While the same width and length, each card is 0.4mm thick making the deck about 1 cm thicker than other decks. This may sound strange, once you shuffle this deck all other decks feel lacking to shuffle. For a while we would rotate between the printed deck and a standard deck and everyone would do a double take while shuffling the standard deck because it felt as if cards were missing. The extra thickness I was initially thinking to reduce actually turned out to be a benefit as it just feels more right in the hands.
Material - Printed PLA matte has a perfect semi-flexible and rubbery quality. Other plastic cards on the market are either slippery or brittle leading to cards all over the floor when a shuffle explodes or a chip on the corner from the earlier exploding shuffle. Paper cards are even worse, they absorb sweat until they're gummier than the underside of a toilet seat and you can't even clean them.
- Cheaper - The material cost of a full deck is around $4 while high quality plastic decks are usually $10-$20 and if you ever happen to lose or damage a single card you can just print that one card instead of buying a whole deck or using a placeholder. This is especially true if you already have filament lying around.
WARNINGS:
Build plates - Matte Charcoal is the stickiest of PLAs and you will not have great results or fun from using a textured/smooth PEI plate. Opt for a PEO/PET plate with small repetitive patterns such carbon fiber and lowpoly which has the bonus of looking and feeling way better. Don't use any of the rainbow holographic film plates, they look good right after printing but the glossy finish is a scratch magnet and gets wrecked after just a day of use.
Card Color - BL Matte Charcoal. Every other color bleeds to an extent. Matte PLA is softer and more flexible than normal PLA and is heavily preffered. Other brands' matte PLA may perform differently but I've mostly used Bambu filaments in my testing.
Font Colors - Use bright, saturated colors. Stay away from translucent or dark filaments
- Rough texture - After printing, the cards may have some roughness from printing residue. This will go away if you shuffle a bunch of times or you can rinse and dry the cards and they become baby smooth instantly.
