Adjustable self-locking top opening for improved visibility and airflow - Centauri Carbon

Hello everyone, this is the first example (that I know of) of a top riser with a hinge for Centauri Carbon. I created it because I believe it increases airflow compared to the classic riser and because it improves internal visibility: I find that the dark glass limits observation of the print from above. 


To operate it, simply lift the door and the lock will activate automatically at the desired height. To close it, just press the two front levers to deactivate the lock and lower the door. It can be opened with one hand and is not fragile or require special care during use.
The hinge can be locked in 4 different positions. If necessary, you can increase the number of positions or move the locking point very easily by modifying the file. 


With a single gesture, the entire piece + door can be put on and taken off without dismantling anything.
I strongly recommend printing the mechanism parts (the black ones) in heat-resistant materials such as PETG or, better still, ABS, because with PLA there is a risk that the springs will deform when inside the heated chamber. 
I have tried to refine the design in detail so that it is as slim, robust and reliable as possible.

 

I listened all your needs and nice suggestions to make a new improved design, way more robust and reliable, with various upgrades and I finally added a complete explanation pdf of the assembly process!


V2 Upgrades: 

  • Complete re-design of the hinges.
  • Hole for PTFE tube.
  • Space for led strip.
  • Led diffuser that helps the led strip to remain in position. 
  • Holes for led cables in the back of the frame.
  • Fixed tolerances of the glass holders (too tight in 1st version)
  • Springs and arms are more robust and reliable. Springs have better dents. 
  • Spring mounting process is easier and tolerances for spring mounting are wider.
  • Compatibility with the Centauri Carbon 1st batch (without proper internal illumination).
  • Bult for 0.4 nozzle
  • All tolerances are improved to match little differents in Centauri construction and assembly.
  • Skrews measures are better managed and properly set. 

 

Documentation upgrade:

  • I made a doc to explain the assembly process in detail. It's plenty of photos and comments, should be very easy now!

 

Instructions:

  • you can print the main body and glass holders in PLA. The springs and arms (black ones in the pictures) should be printed in PETG/ABS to not deform under higher temperatures and for proper elasticity. 
  • led diffuser has to be printed in translucent material (obviously ahahah)
  • You can print everything with a 0.4 nozzle. 
  • If you download the 3mf, the pieces are already set into different sheets with the correct material assigned.
  • Main body pieces (PLA) can be printed with 3 walls or more, 15% or more infill, ACTIVATE TREE SUPPORTS.
  • Mechanism parts (PETG/ABS) can be printed with 6 walls or more, 50% or more infill, ACTIVATE TREE SUPPORTS

Bill of Materials:

  • M4 8mm, 10 PIECES
  • M4 12mm, 10 PIECES (you can even use 16mm instead)
  • M4 16mm or more, 2 PIECES (theese skrews are for the hinge. 16mm is sufficient, but is better to use a 20-30mm M4 for the best robustness).
  • M3 12mm, 2 PIECES
     

 

Centauri Carbon 1st batch:

  • If you have the Centauri Carbon 1st batch (the one whithout proper illumination), please do not print the standard clip but replace it with the longer one in the STL folder.
  • If you don't have the Centauri Carbon 1st batch or if you don't have a clue of what I'm tolking about, please skip ths process :)

 

Bambulab users:

  • Hi guys, I know that many of you wrote me even in private for the Bambulab hinge. I didn't forget you :) I finish the development of the Hinge for the P1S/X1 series, it took me a complete redesign from skratch but it has the same functionalities as the Centauri one. 

     

    Since I don't have those machines I will be happy to test it with yours. I cannot even make proper photos to present the project, so I'm really searching for trusted and competent beta-testers. The design is very inspired to the one published here, with the new hinge and the led strip space, so I'm pretty sure that you won't waste your material. If you want to help me and have the project in preview, please contact me in private so I can send you the 3mf!
