This is a project to create a “Lite” version of the Steam Deck, allowing for the device to remain portable, but eliminating the built-in controllers. You can then use Bluetooth controllers. This project aimed to keep Steam Decks from becoming e-waste and isn't recommended for fully functional Steam Decks (unless you really want to do this). This modification is entirely reversable and does not require any cutting, sawing, drilling, etc. It simply moves parts from the stock shell to a new one.
Other designs remove the battery and/or screen, and I wanted to keep both. This design retains the midframe from the Steam Deck and doesn't require any modifications, reducing the risk of damaging the battery and running the risk of a fire. The most difficult part may be the removal of the screen, but there are several great tutorials online on how to remove the screen. The screen is then laid back onto the midframe. The existing adhesive should be sufficient to keep the screen from moving around.
I recommend using a online tutorial for a shell swap to get all of the components out of the original shell.
NOTICE: Although low, there are inherent risks of damage or injury from performing this mod. If you choose to do this mod, you do so at your own risk. I am not responsible for any damages or injuries that could occur from performing this mod.
This setup uses the following parts from the stock Steam Deck shell:
- Midframe
- Motherboard
- Heatsink
- Fan
- Audio board
- Wi-Fi & Bluetooth Antennas
- Screen
- Speakers
- Power & volume buttons.
What is not used:
- Daughterboards
- ABXY, Directional Pad boards
- Triggers and Bumper boards, brackets, and buttons
- Track pads
- Microphone and light sensors (flexible PCB behind the screen)
- Joysticks
- Ribbon cable from motherboard to daughterboard
- Interconnect ribbon cable
I've added slots on the back for future use to create attachments, such as hooks that can be used to attach to an airplane/train seat-back tray.
Feel free to remix (STEP files included) or create accessories for the back.
