This base is engineered to improve space efficiency, structural stability and thermal performance during printer operation.
The assembly provides a rigid support platform that does not introduce additional vibration, while the filament spool unwinds reliably from beneath the printer, reducing the required footprint around the machine.
Any type of anti-vibration pads may be installed under the legs (I have obtained consistent results using a standard mouse pad under the stand).
Although the system remains stable without pads, their use can further decrease vibration transmission to the work surface.
All structural components are 3D-printed. The following hardware is required for assembly:
- 12 × M5×10 cylinder head screws
- 8 × M5×16 cylinder head screws
- 2 × M3×10 countersunk screws
- 2 × M3×4×5 heat-set inserts
Each printed part features a keyed geometry that allows only one correct orientation, simplifying installation and preventing assembly errors.
The model was produced in PETG for improved mechanical and thermal resistance, though other compatible materials may be used based on application requirements.
The underside includes ventilation openings designed to reduce heat accumulation beneath the printer. These channels enhance passive airflow, allowing the motherboard fan to draw in cooler air more efficiently. As a result, the printer maintains lower operating temperatures without requiring any auxiliary exhaust fan.
Assembly Procedure
- Main Board Assembly:
Secure the main board using the 12 × M5×10 screws. - Leg Installation:
Attach each leg with 2 × M5×16 screws.
The legs incorporate hexagonal nut traps that are intentionally sealed with a 0.2 mm sacrificial layer to avoid the need for support material. This layer should be removed after printing using a small chisel or blade. - Decorative Elements:
Install the optional hexagonal and triangular covers if the appearance requires them. - Roller Support Installation:
Insert the two heat-set inserts into the lever components that retain the spool support.
Fix the two support brackets using the M3×10 screws, then insert the circular spool base. - Filament Guide:
Insert the filament guide into the upper triangular opening near the Z-axis.
A PTFE tube may be installed inside the guide, although direct filament routing is also possible.
