In-Ground Worm Compost Bin Manual
Product Overview
Your in-ground worm compost bin (or worm tower) is a simple, sustainable tool designed to compost kitchen scraps directly in the garden with the help of composting worms. Made from a perforated cylindrical container, this bin allows worms to move freely between the surrounding soil and the scraps inside, turning waste into nutrient-rich castings right where your plants need it.
Material: I recomment to not print this in PLA as it is less resistant for outdoor use but rather use PETG.
Installation Instructions
- Choose a Location
- Place the bin in a garden bed, preferably near plants that can benefit from the nutrient-rich soil.
- Pick a shaded or partially shaded area to prevent overheating.
- Dig a Hole
- Dig a hole to bury the cylinder.
- Insert the Bin
- Place the cylinder in the hole, ensuring it's upright and stable.
- Fill the soil back around the cylinder to secure it in place.
- Add Bedding
- Add a 3–4 inch (7–10 cm) layer of moist bedding inside such as wet soil.
- This creates a comfortable environment for the worms.
- Introduce Worms
- Add 250–500 composting worms (e.g., Eisenia fetida, also known as red wigglers).
- Cover lightly with food scraps and more bedding.
Usage Instructions
- Feeding the Worms
- Add food scraps 2–3 times per week. Ideal items include:
- Fruit and vegetable peels
- Coffee grounds
- Crushed eggshells
- Shredded paper or egg cardboard
- Avoid: meat, dairy, oily foods, citrus, spicy items, and large volumes of onion or garlic.
- Add food scraps 2–3 times per week. Ideal items include:
- Cover and Moisture
- Cover food scraps with a layer of bedding or soil to reduce odor and fruit flies.
- Check moisture: bedding should feel like a wrung-out sponge. Add water (rarely needed) or dry bedding as needed.
- Harvesting
- Worm castings will accumulate at the bottom over 2–3 months.
- You can remove the top food layer, scoop out finished compost from the bottom with a hand trowel, then return the rest.
- Alternatively, install multiple towers and let one rest while harvesting from the other.
Maintenance Tips
- Check the bin weekly for moisture and food levels.
- If ants or pests appear, reduce food quantity and add more bedding.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Bad odor | Too much food, not enough bedding | Add dry bedding, mix contents gently |
| Worms escaping | Too wet, too dry, poor food | Balance moisture, avoid acidic/spicy foods |
| Mold or fruit flies | Exposed scraps | Cover all food with bedding |
