This is my first upload and experience 3D modeling, hope i am doing this correctly and apologize if I broke any rules.
Working off the excellent work done by @print.in.3d and their Single Spool Dry Box , I made some adjustments and additions to make the model more reliable and functional for my work flow.
Features from original I loved:
- add or remove desiccant without removing filament from box
- print directly from box to printer from built in port on top
- the dry box can be oriented in any direction without spilling desiccant and still freely feed filament to printer.
But I found that the axle did not keep the spool centered and sometimes the spool would fall off the edge of the spool adapter (especially with Bambu reusable spools). It still worked but found it less than elegant. Also I really wanted a means to hold a hygrometer and have it easily visible and attached to the main structure of the print. Also the axle holder that is screwed into the sides of the container was a bit tight and hard to remove and insert the spool if you wanted to say dry out the filament or use it in an AMS.
To address these “wants” I made the following adjustments:
- added "rims" and widened the spool adapter to fill the entire box width.
- added a hygrometer mount opposite the desiccant volume to monitor internal environment.
- Widened the opening on the axle mounts to allow for easier mounting and removal of spools.
In addition for those who have already printed the original version of this model by @print.in.3d this file includes a retrofit part that will glue in place perfectly to add the Hygrometer feature to their print. You will need to look closely to tell if its a native print or a retro fit.
A word about compatibility.
As in the original model this one is specific to the model of 4L cereal box used. For this one I used this 4L Cereal Box which i ordered from amazon in Canada. Note the lid shape which is an Octagon. There is another model of Cereal box which has a more square shaped lid and this model may not fit it so please be aware of this. I have not tested this but the retro-fit kit may fit this square lid version, If you try this please let me know in the comments how it turns out.
The BOM lists both PC4-M10 and PC4-M6 PTFE ports. This model natively only supports PC4-M10, but you can easily use PC4-M6 ports using an M10 to M6 Thread adapter. Alternately you can also just print out a PC4-M10 port from Makerworld.
Model Issues:
I printed my copies in PLA+ and .28 layer height. This makes for a quicker print and since this is a functional part I don't care about the decrease in quality. However this does impact the quality of the threads built into the filament port making it tighter to screw in the PTFE port. For me I just used an M10 tap and recut the threads in post after which it screws in with no resistance. If you don't have a tap it will still work but will require more effort to screw in that nut.
You don't have to use the “rims”. Some spools have centers that are a constant diameter and don't really need the rims, especially if the hub diameter allows for a good friction fit. I have supplied 3 sizes of spool hub diameter sizes (53mm, 63mm, 73mm). If you are so inclined you can resize these to perfectly friction fit almost any spool hubs (recommend using a Boolean difference function to cut down the 73mm hub adapter to what you need but scaling up the 53 or 63 mm works too).
