This adapter allows you to use low-height 1" ball casters (¼-20 stud style) on round metal table legs. The parametric Fusion file is included for easy remixing.
Printing tips
- Note there are two mid-print pauses to drop in a ¼" washer and nut.
- This is a functional, load bearing part. While PLA works fine and other materials will likely be less brittle, please note the various strength settings in my original print profile if you slice this yourself - some areas have been reinforced.
- The base ring that contacts the floor when you want to disable the caster can optionally be printed in TPU. I did some in TPU-for-AMS and some without - the floor grip is slightly better with TPU, but it's not really necessary. Doing all-PLA/PETG is also sturdy. If you DO print in TPU, remember to use glue stick and the textured build plate for easier removal, especially because the H2D will heat your build plate hotter than TPU's default (for the other main filament used).
- The outer caster-disabling sleeve is optional if you always want the casters to roll (just delete it).
- There are several holes that need bridging; the model prints these with a sacrificial layer across these holes to make them clean. Use a drill bit or hobby knife to clear them out before adding the caster stud.
What's this for?
I want to easily access all sides and especially the top of my H2D. Not only will I have 2 AMS and a TPU feed above it, but if I have to crank on an extruder I prefer to be lazy and sit with it at a comfortable height.
VEVOR makes an inexpensive line of stainless steel work tables. You can buy many of them with casters installed, but as mentioned, I want to keep my H2D low and still have casters. The lowest table that comfortably fits the H2D is their $88 24"x24"x24" appliance stand (or on Amazon). There's many other table sizes available that use the same legs.
I had some very low profile 1" ball transfer bearings I wanted to use. These only add 1.5" / 39mm to your overall table height, as opposed to the 3-6" added by most casters. It also keeps the load centered whereas an adapter for traditional casters will need to bear a bending moment since the floor contact is not directly under the legs. The H2D plus this table is 90 lbs / 40 kg. Each caster is rated for 75 lbs / 35kg (300 lbs / 140 kg total for four legs).
This adapter includes a sleeve you can rotate to disable the caster by raising it slightly off the ground. I found that even when the printer is shaking a lot, the casters don't make any noise; however, the table itself does shake slightly less when the casters are raised/locked out. You're fine either way.
A quick note about the work surface sidewalls on some of these VEVOR tables: I thought they would be a nice security blanket for a shaky $2K investment, but honestly the H2Ds feet are grippy enough that it never walks even with all the shaking. I now appreciate the walls because they prevent my tools/poop bucket from falling off. They're slightly sharp, so consider silicone edge trim or printing a guard. Also, you can get an inch or two of space back with this left-angle IEC adapter.
