History of the Moai
The Moai are monolithic statues carved by the Rapa Nui people on Easter Island (Rapa Nui) between 1250 and 1500 CE. These iconic figures, often depicting ancestors or chiefs, were carved from volcanic tuff and can weigh up to 75 tons, with heights reaching 33 feet. Around 1,000 Moai exist, most standing on stone platforms called ahu, facing inland to watch over villages. The statues symbolize spiritual and political power, but their creation and transport—likely using sledges or rollers—contributed to deforestation, which may have led to resource scarcity and societal collapse by the 18th century. Today, the Moai are a UNESCO World Heritage site, representing the ingenuity and cultural legacy of the Rapa Nui.
