Using transparent filament and individual layers, I've created a unique bookmark with a smooth surface yet delicate texture.
The dragonfly bookmark prints in just a few minutes and can be easily folded along the fold lines. (Note: The first layer is the top layer.)
Adhesive is not required, but can be used if needed.
Please note:
- Also possible without transparent filament. (Please see the notes below.)
- I recommend PLA Basic. PLA Silk and PLA Matte is sometimes unstable, and PLA Metal lacks transparency for the outer layers.
- A smooth print bed is preferable, but with transparent filament, it's less important and can even result in a slight glitter.
- For optimal results, the print bed must be clean.
- I recommend letting the print cool before removing it from the print bed.
- Be careful when handling the dragonfly's delicate legs.
The wings were particularly important to me – they had to be as close to the original as possible. My goal was to recreate the fine structures of the dragonfly's wings using a 0.4mm nozzle. This was made possible by the layered structure: The middle layer forms the delicate structure, while the top and bottom layers provide a clean finish.
Printing without transparent filament
The best results are achieved with transparent filament, but not everyone has it in stock, which is why I adapted the model accordingly.
To ensure that the bookmark works without transparent filament, the following must be observed:
- Use a light-colored filament instead of transparent (e.g., light blue or white).
- White (for the wings) should be replaced by the main color - so the blue dragonfly gets a blue wing structure.
| With transparency | Without transparency | |
| Color 1 | Black | unchanged |
| Color 2 | Transparent | light filament (e.g., light blue or white) |
| Color 3 | white | like color 4 (main color) |
| Color 4 | any color (main color) | unchanged |
Of course, color 2 should be chosen to match the main color. Feel free to share photos of your dragonflies in the comments.
Settings
It's best to use my profile, as I spent a lot of time finding the optimal settings. But if you can't, you must definitely consider the following settings:
- Layer height: 0.08 mm
- Height of first view: 0.08 mm
- Line width must be 0.4, even for the first layer.
- Turn on thin wall detection.
- Elephant foot compensation: 0
- Top paint penetration layers: 1
- Bottom paint penetration layers: 1
- All layers must be painted individually. (Exact instructions to follow)
Which transparent filament do I recommend?
I used HS-Clear-Sky Blue from iSANMATE for almost all prints. With a thickness of 0.08 mm, the color doesn't matter.
I also tested PLA-Twinkling Pink from eSUN, and it works just as well, but for a glitter effect, a textured print bed is sufficient. (But only with transparent filament)
The following will be coming soon
- Another profile based on the Banded Darter (Dragonfly of the Year 2025)
- Instructions so that anyone can easily paint their own dragonfly. (Important for those who don't use the Bambulab slicer)
- If requested, I will also create a profile for PLA Silk filament.
