Origin Story

The Thunderbolts were first introduced to readers and the Marvel Universe in The Incredible Hulk #449 (January 1997), written by Peter David and illustrated by Mike Deodato Jr. They were a team of flamboyant new heroes who stepped up to fill the gap left when the Avengers were declared dead after the events of the 1996 "Onslaught" crossover.

The movie portrayal starts with an entirely different team and premise, as is the common thread each time they are reinvented. Valentina Allegra de Fontaine traps a group of antiheroes and forces them into a dangerous mission that, if they unite as a team, could bring them redemption.
